While strolling along Antigua's historic center, and not far from its iconic "Arco de Santa Catalina" or from the "Parque Central" square, you'll certainly find the awesome ruins of the ancient "Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen", known locally as "Iglesia del Carmen". It was built by the Carmelite Order around 1638 and, along the centuries, it has been severely damaged by the earthquakes of 1717, 1728, 1773, 1874 and 1976. Surprisingly, its monumental facade was only partially destroyed and can still be seen from the street level. However, the church's interior collapsed and is closed for visitors due to the immense risks envolved. Originally, its Spanish baroque facade had 24 beautifully carved columns and some are almost intact. A quick stop, a few pictures and maybe some shopping at the local handicrafts' street market - the "Mercado El Carmen". Enjoy!

Very lovely ruin of what must have been a beautiful church before the earthquake. It would be a wonderful event venue-when I look into the open nave.

Beautiful ruins of a relatively small church notable for the huge cracks in the façade. Not accessible to the public but free to look at from the outside. There are a few shops and vendors hanging about as well.

This is one of my favorite church ruins in Antigua. It can only be viewed from the outside. No inside access for the public. Majestic and Intricate columns, very nostalgic. I wish the city can raise funds to restore this church to its former glory. Just outside this church and along the side are vendors selling local handicrafts. Many good buys. Excellent place to buy gifts for your love ones. Not too far from Casa Santo Domingo.

We were part of a day tour from Guatemala City and our guide pointed us to this church. Only the facade is left as the rest was destroyed by an earthquake. The facade is still very pretty and very ornate. It is definitely worth a quick stop during your walk around Antigua.

Not far from the Santa Catalina Arch. Very nice looking ruins from an old church. Good photo spot. And street market in front of the building. The building is closed to visitors.

Small ruins but you can't miss it if you go to the Sunday textile market in the street just in front of the ruins. You can't go it, but you can peer through the bars that are used to protect it.

I thought that the architecture on this build was really unique. Although it is a; ruin it still hold the charm of the church when it was active.
