This square’s name was changed many times. Originally Nikolaev square, later Teveleva square, Soviet Ukraine square ,finally Constitution square. On the south-western side of the Nikolaev Square (Soviet Ukraine Square) there were trade houses of Dobrinin (1880), in place of which in 1915-1916 a house of insurance company 'Russia' was built (Labor Palace) as well as a shop of Ponamarev's and Ryzhov's products, where now there is a 'Lux' shop. The famous building, that was built at the beginning of that century by architect Beketov on the Constitution square.

Most monuments are impressive by their size and spacious surroundings. UAH government is gradually tearing down all soviet era communist monuments and statutes.

Even when it is a snowy -20 C, beautiful photographs of the surrounding historical buildings such as Annunciation Cathedral make this area worth your time.

This isn't a big square. But it's nice and centrally located downtown. So it's very easy to access other sites from here.

It's not exactly square shaped, but it is large and open. On one end is the giant thermometer, in one area is the statue. The history museum is also on the square.
