- KarenM1_101,043 contributionsGorgeous areaThe Old Town is gorgeous. The large imposing walls surround the area, and the entire city is pedestrian only. In this area there is no shortage of apartments/hotels, restaurants and shops that sell everything from high quality goods to souvenir trinkets. There is an old pharmacy, several churches and beautiful fountains to visit. Outside the town is the funicular, which I highly recommend for the beautiful views of the city. If you plan your day wisely you could see everything in a very full day. However, I would suggest staying 2 full days. You can also take several tours to other areas (such as Montenegro and Mostar) from here as well.Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten October 4, 2023
- David and Heath... MWest Vancouver, Canada101 contributionsDubrovnik for Seniors and DisabledMy wife and I (74 and 73 years old) spent 7 nights in the Old Town in a wonderful Air B&B near the north east corner of the walls. It was 94 uneven steps from the main Stradum, 39 steps from the top north/ south street and then 32 steps to the Buza Gate. We did have help with our luggage ( highly recommended no matter where you stay in the Old Town.) Taxi drivers charge €10 per bag, but worth every penny. Both of us are fit, but if you have any mobility or balance issues, stay near the Stradum or outside the walls and use the Pile or Ploce Gates that are flatter and have a wheelchair ramp. Public buses, taxis, tour buses and car pickups are all close to the Pile Gate and public buses, taxis at the Ploce Gate. If you have mobility issues and are on a cruise ship, make sure it has a port berth as some moor off the Old Port and tender in. Again, if you have mobility issues, you will not be able to walk or wheel the walls and you will be limited to about 10% of the Old Town. Still lots to see and many shops, restaurants, churches, museums available. If we had to do it again, we would stay half our time in Cavtat (see our review of Cavtat) and half in Dubrovnik Old Town, Hop off bus tour is good, but Dubrovnik City is only 43000 so not a lot to see outside the Old Town.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten October 17, 2023

- kevin412016County Dublin, Ireland61 contributionsCity Wall, Old town Dubrovnik OCT23visiting the "old town" and walking round the city walls is simply a must do when you visit Dubronik. Hint straight away - the cost to walk the city walls is €35 per person.. however walk right up to the pile gate entrance of the city wall walk and directly opposite is a tourist office. Go in there and but a one day pass which is the exact same amount -n €35 - yet with this pass you also get admission to a number of other musuems in the old town and to top it off includes the priece of your bus fare home! Anyway the ting you have to be prepared for is not only the walking but going up and down steps. steep in some areas. i would not let taht put off the older generation as there is no rush and panic to complet the walk in record time.. you can take as long as you want and along the way there is some nice bars and coffee places.. The views are simply stunning. half way round the walk is the maritme museam.. of all the museums that are included in the pass this is probably the one not to miss. some great historical artifacts and make sure you also visit the top floor where there is some very cool model ships the city walls walk is fantastic, but another hint try to go earlier in the day. we went at 9.30am and the sun was not so hot. We are from Dublin in Ireland so not use to teh heat in OCT23was quite hotel when we sat down to our lunch in the old town at a very nice Italian restaurant.. One other hint carry water. i know it can be a pain in the butt having a bag and carrying stuff like water but half way round we were very glad we did.. hope this all has helped. enjoy your trip to lovely DubronikVisited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten October 23, 2023

- CatharineBOttawa, Canada1,641 contributionsIs it a victim of its own success?Old Town Dubrovnik has a dazzling beauty with its orange red tiled roofs, beautiful buildings and walls built of stone. Entering each small alley was like stepping into a different scene of life. Sometimes there are cafes with rows of chairs along the steps, sometimes are outdoor clothes drying lines hanging from house to house. It is built for exploration as one can walk down Stradun Street, or anywhere else through the narrow alleys, small roads and step master like staircases. There is a whole system of stone staircases built to directly connect with the residential areas with the Old Quarter. The rows of souvenir shops seem to be always open and light up until late at night, but leave your pocket book behind as everything is more expensive than elsewhere. Admiring the ancient architecture and spectacular scenery from the walls is expensive, but not too be miss experience, but beware that you will spend time dodging people, and more people. We spent four days in Dubrovnik on the tail end of our month long stay in Croatia. I am happy that we visited and it should not be missed. We took countless pictures and had memorable experiences, but we will probably not return to Dubrovnik as it is a victim of its own success. Too crowded and too expensive. Old Town Dubrovnik was the priciest area that we visited, drinks at the Buza Bar were about 25% more expensive than a similar establishment we visited in Zadar. The same can be said of restaurants. We also purchased the Dubrovnik 3 day pass which turned out to be a great value and keep in mind that one can visit the walls and Fort Lovrijenac on the same ticket if visiting the same day. The preservation of Old Town Dubrovnik, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the result of meticulous reconstruction after the earthquake of 1667.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten December 4, 2023
- Ben FBloomington, Indiana1,818 contributionsThe Jewel of the Balkan AdriaticMy first memories of Dubrovnik originated from stories told by my uncle who loves to travel and has visited many European countries—never with any photos, since he’s a ludite—so when I got the chance to go, I couldn’t wait to share my experiences with him. Sure enough, I could envision his tales as I walked the dramatic streets and quaint alleys of Old Town. Firstly, any Game of Thrones fanatic will enjoy their visit and should seek out all the filming locations. Many souvenir shops clearly advertise Game of Thrones merch by the windows, and it’s undeniably become a tourism slogan of sorts for the area. I haven’t watched the series, though, and wandering around gave me a fresh look into how life was like in the past. There are many gates to enter Old Town, and for sure the Pile Gate on the western side of the walls is accessible for wheelchairs. Entering via Pile dumps you directly on Stradun, the widest and most central (pedestrian) avenue of the town. From here, you can branch off into countless small alleyways leading to apartments, shops, restaurants, and plazas. I was quite impressed with the extent to which most of Old Town is wheelchair-accessible, albeit with some cobblestones to contend with. There are also very clear, easy-to-read red signs (in English) pointing you to specific restaurants and attractions—I hadn’t noticed anything like that in similar historic fortified places like Kotor. There was some construction ongoing in various places, but it really didn’t detract from my experience. Most definitely in preparation for the summer season…I went in March, which is my recommendation as the best time to visit; the weather is great but the crowds aren’t as thick. But even in spring, the tourist clientele were a diverse many: lots of folks from Western Europe, USA, South Korea, China, and the Middle East. Everyone from anywhere can have fun in Dubrovnik! Enjoy this clean, safe, and charming city!Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten April 5, 2024
- merc89891,419 contributionsLovely old townThe place is made famous by The Game of Throne series. We were there early with less crowd and easy to cover most areas. Weather was sunny and warm for Spring and reached a high 26c by mid day. The climb up the stairs to the wall and the walk along the wall was tiring due to the hot sunny weather. Visited most of the key areas and had drinks and lunch at nearby cafes.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten April 20, 2024

I highly recommend the wall walk and to go to the fortress on the other side which is not connected to the town. The scenery from the wall and fortress are amazing.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten April 23, 2024
- John F28 contributionsExpensive CityWow must be one of the most expensive cities in the world, prices within the walls are ridiculously high for food and drinks. Having said that the place is beautiful and so well maintained. Plenty of shops to browse round. The small harbour is a hive of activity.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten April 30, 2024

An incredibly beautiful old town to wander around and soak up the atmosphere. There are also lots of small museums which are interesting to explore, or you can easily get lost in the streets hanging out at the many small cafes and enjoying the views.
I would recommend spending about a day exploring the old town, it is long enough to visit the museums, relax in a cafe and buy some souvenirs.

Making our way through beautiful Old Town within the fortress walls was a fun experience despite the crowds, extremely high prices for food/drink, and crazy heat. It was over 100 degrees the day we were there and it is hard to find shade unless you are seated at one of the restaurants. Nevertheless, it was a unique and memorable adventure.
It's interesting to see this palatial space as a self contained city with markets, dry cleaners, restaurants, and other places of business taking up the various nooks and crannies. There are also numerous apartments where people actually live. Laundry was hanging out to dry, dogs were running around, locals were hanging out on balconies chatting on cell phones, tv's were blaring, kids were crying, the smell of various types of food permeated the air, etc. I kept thinking how strange it was to see so many modern amenities, dispositions and attitudes juxtoposed against such a setting. How strange and awesome to live in a literal castle/fortress.
Once we got used to the idea of being inside such a fairytale setting, the awe kind of wears thin when you start taking into account how commercialized and expensive it all is. The As mentioned, the food prices were crazy steep. There are stores hawking all kinds of souvenir options too, both inside and outside the walls and small things like water or ice cream are costly. We were told the money goes to fortress/city upkeep, so that does provide some consolation, but be prepared to spend quite a bit of money, particularly if this is a family affair. Lastly, the ground is SUPER SLIPPERY. The limestone and rounded rocks make for a slippery surface made worse by heat, and I can imagine rain/early dew or evening mist makes it even more so. Treaded shoes is advised!
Overall, I'm happy I/we did it. The setting is stunning and the excursion makes for a unique adventure.

Fascinating and attractive city which I covered comfortably in two days.
The view from the top of the cable car is wonderful and the city walls well worth walking around (2 kilometres) although in one part did get a bit of vertigo!
The city is not cheap though - cable car costs 200 kn (approx £22) and visiting the City Walls 250 kn (approx £28). Good choice of restaurants but those inside the city walls are expensive.
Recommend to visit if possible when there are not many cruise ships in town as the city can get super super busy especially in the mornings with so many group tours.

Highly recommend to stay inside the Old Town, or the nearest as possible. Really amazing. With the Dubrovnik card, you can enter lots of attractions including City Walls and museum for 250kn for a day, It also includes free public transport for 24 hours (can be a different day as the DBV card).

The city is a gem and you can find beauty in every direction. There are details on every building that take my heart away and the city walls tell the story for centuries. It’s a privilege to walk the streets and have an unique view of ancient history and beauty. It’s a unique historical place that should be visited at least once in your life. The city beaches are under 10 minutes away so while you swim in the magic Adriatic sea you can look at the city walls and the protector St Vlaho. Amazing

We have been staying at Rixos Premium hotel, 15 minute walk from Dubrovnik old city. We have walked in and out a few times during this past week.
WITHOUT A DOUBT....this is the year to visit the city.
There are no crowds at all as the hoardes of cruise ships are not here. Its amazing.
We visit Croatia sbout 3 times a year but stopped going to Dubrovnik old city years ago as it was just unbearable with far too many tourists all crammed in. Terrible.
This year is wonderful. You can walk around, get a seat in any restaurant/bar....perfect. even the boats to Lokrum Island are not busy.
Don't hesitate to visit this year.
You will receive a very warm welcome too, but that goes without saying .

Old Town is one of the gems along the Croatian coast, with impressive fortresses, old city walls, scrumptious seafood restaurants, good people watching, and historic charm.
If you have time, I recommend walking inside Old Town, walking the city walls above it, and taking a boat ride (or go kayaking) around it. The views from each of those places are different but all great.

Walking through the gated entrances into the old inner walled city you really feel like you've walked back hundreds of years. Outside it's busy and noisy with tourists and heavy traffic. Inside the main central street leads into a series of narrow side streets. Lots of cafes, bars, restaurants in these side streets avoiding the higher priced ones on main route. Easy to walk around find the main tourist sites and the old harbour. Even in late September it was very, very busy. The only shops we saw were tourist / souvenir shops in centre.
We've never seen Game of Thrones so the large number of tourists shops and other tours linked to it does give a negative 'Disney' feel. Dubrovnik has more to offer surely??
We'd bought a 3 day Dubrovnik Pass to give us reduced entrance onto the city walls walk and The Rector's House. We also bought our ferry tickets from the official ticket office in the old harbour to go to the island of Lokrum - a 20% discount if you have the Dubrovnik Pass too.
We found most restaurants expensive compared to other European cities and not a great food selection either - most menus offer very similar food.

If you're going to Dubrovnik, you'll need to see the Old Town. I would recommend getting a walking tour to learn more about the history and then explore on your own. There's so many alleys, shops, restaurants etc to explore!
Extremely clean and safe - felt very safe walking around at night solo.
Visited in May and the crowds were great, no waits at restaurants either. Everyone we spoke to said June/July/August the town is close to bursting with crowds.

Free to enter and a maze of small cobbled streets in which you can roam and imagine what life was like hundreds of tears ago. Be warned it is a very popular tourist destination so gets packed in the day. Add the summer weather and it can easily get stressful with young children and elderly parents.
Recommend bringing g a hat, sun screen and lots of water. There are public fountains where you can fill up bottles but buying water in the city is eye watering expensive.

I would stay only 3 nights MAX in Dubrovnik, but I recommend it staying inside the walls, even in a small pension. It is a magical experience to stay a couple of nights inside a medieval city. Save at least 3 nights for SPLIT, a very nice touristic city. Many gems there!!

I have a terrible bird phobia. Some people told me I’d manage ok in Dubrovnik - that there weren’t too many pigeons. We are staying 20km away we travelled there today by boat but I had to leave on the same boat! They are so tame and there are so many of them. Some people don’t like birds but I am extremely ornithophobic! My question is this... should I attempt to visit at night or are they still roaming about after dark? I would happily get a taxi there and back at night time just so we could experience the city pigeon-free.

Hi can you tell me please if the steps are only in the old town or are all over the city ? thanks
Written September 9, 2019
The city walls are lots of high steps and not advisable for someone with walking difficulty’s. The city is on a flat area with slopping paths in and out of the city at various points. The entrance/exit at the harbour end of the city is a good way to leave or enter as it’s where the war map is of the destruction done to Dubrovnik and also the way to the cable car.

where can you start the walk unguided
Written September 3, 2019
You can start the walking tour of the walls at any main entrance gate , their is no charge .
The walk is a great view of the old city and the surrounding ocean on the coast side , remember their is a lot of stairs to climb , so take it easy.
you will see another small castle when walking along the pile gate area, that castle can be accessed by a walk way behind the bus station just outside pile gate, enjoy

Hi all. We’re visiting Dubrovnik for the first time in sept but it’s our third time in Croatia usually going to the quieter porec. My question is how much precaution do we need for pickpockets? Porec is very safe and there was no real need but we went to Barcelona and had to be constantly vigilant etc. Do we need the same level of protection against pic pockets as Barcelona??? Thanks in advance.

We felt very safe when we were there, the local people are very friendly and welcoming. Take normal precautions as you would anywhere, keep your belongings close to you, leave valuables in your hotel safe.Mainly have a good time and relax - the people really are welcoming.
