The 8E fee is a rip off, can walk a different path for free
The walk up the walls is very good, you get spectacular views over the Bay of Kotor. There is a ruined fort at the top. It costs 8E which is a tourist rip off and the state of the paths at the top is very poor. You can walk up a different path for free that goes right up to the top of the mountain and then you get views over Kotor from higher up with the fort in as well, so you're probably better off doing this.

    Spectacular views
Spectacular views on the walk up to the fortress and at the top itself. Yes, there is an entry fee to pay from 8am, but this is a medieval structure and needs ongoing maintenance. It is extremely steep in places. I would say it is challenging in the heat unless you are very fit. Numerous other visitors of different shapes, sizes and ages only went part way that I saw. I have a knee issue and by the time I'd been up and back down, my legs were like jelly and I'm feeling it in my knee the day after. You can walk a good part of the walls around the actual city without paying anything, from the North to the South gate or in reverse.

    Tough but worth it
I t took me over 2 hours up and down with plenty of stops but i took my time as i am not very fit and it was definitely worth it.The views are spectacular . There are some spots very tough where steps are narrow and some areas are uneven. There are some ladies selling water and soft drinks at the top

Love this hike and the views
This is our second time walk I the walls and battlements up the side of the mountain. It is loads of fun. I suggest packing a lunch and stopping frequently along the way. There are a few places where old garrisons were located. Some places to sit and soak up the views. Fun plants and birds along the way. The close you get to the top the more you can see over/around the hill towards Cetinje. We like leaving late AM in the winter or spring months. And staying g top long enough to see some sunset colors as we descend. If you take the route down to Tryphon’s Cathedral, you can see that as well and then have a coffee at the rooftop cafe of Hotel Hippocampus. If you go to Tryphon see the museums on the second floor. Take a liter or two of water per person depending on temp any your normal needs. Take your advil or aleve before you depart! Enjoy.

    Worth the trek
Fantastic hike to the top, with so much to look at on the way. Views all the way up were phenomenal, as with the rich history of the place. You do need decent mobility to get up as the path and stairs are uneven and, when we went up, slippery. It took us about 3 hours up and back with 2 young kids (5 & 7).

    Kotor’s Historic Fortress
I’ve seen my fair share of ancient city walls in my years of traveling, and Kotor’s walls surely rank up there, scoring particularly high marks for their modest size yet big charm. You can climb to the top of the walls in a few places, but doing so is not compatible with a wheelchair. The best ways to appreciate the walls are to view them aerially from the mountainside or to enter the old town through the iconic Sea Gate.

Details of the entrances and walk
There are three entrances to the Kotor Walls walk, all along the back of the old town. One is near the north entrance under an old arch and up 50m, one is up a small staircase roughly in the middle (blink and you miss it), the final one is just on the left as you come in the southern gate. All of them have signs to the Kotor Fortress with a map of the town. They each start on a different path and then join up about a fifth of the way up. It’s EUR15 per person and even if you get there early enough to avoid paying, you will need to show your ticket to exit the turnstile when you come down. The walk is hard but not too hard and as it zigzags up there are plenty of places to stop and take photos. I would definitely avoid going when the ground is wet or in full sun. We entered at 8am and exited about 9:30 with lots of photo and rest stops. At the top there is an enterprising woman selling drinks from a cool box at double the price down below but then she carried them all the way up.

A strenuous walk - go early for maximum shade
This is a strenuous walk up the hillside to visit the old fortress buildings. I recommend trainers and/or shoes with good gripping soles. Only go if you feel that €15/per person is worth contributing to the preservation of this amazing town and its hillside fortress. Take water and sun protection. Like many places in Montenegro, it was cash only for the tickets. The ticket seller said that they no Internet to accept card payments although he clearly had a card machine there on his desk. My husband later said we should have offered him a hotspot as we had great signal there 🤣 We started this walk around 9am, and the path was in the shade most of the way up. By the time we were coming down around 10am, much of the path was in the sun. I wouldn't want to be climbing up in the heat of July sun. We got to the bottom around 10.30am The route has steps at the side as well as a stony track next to them. The stones can be slippery in places so I recommend using the steps when you come down. Going up on the stony track was fine. It took us around 40 mins to go up - we are relatively fit and stopped for water breaks and to look at bits of the fortress. There are several sections of the fortress as you ascend, so you can break up the climb by having a look at them. All the sections are ruins. There are some interpretation boards to help you understand what you are seeing. The views from the top are amazing. And you have a sense or accomplishment from having made it up and down - and have truly earned yourself a heavenly ice cream from Moritz Eis at the bottom (I heartily recommend a combo of Dark Chocolate and Mandarin Orange flavours!

There are different areas of the walls
It is important to realise that there are different areas of the city walls. Some are low level and surround the flat area of Kotor. Only bits of this are accessible and I don't think they are priorities. The bit that most of these reviews are about is the section of the walls that snake up the hill past the Church of Our Lady of Remedy and up to the Fortress. This costs 15 euros to walk (free for young kids) and is uphill and strenuous, but offers great views. The best views of the old town itself is the lower half, where the opposite hills frame the old town. The view at the switchback just past the Church of Our Lady of Remedy is particularly celebrated, and on our walk this is as far as the family managed. It was do-able with a 8 year old and 10 year old, though in summer best do it in the morning as that's when you get the shade on this section. I continued up to the fortress where you get more expansive views of the bay, but not so good views of the old town.

We avoided the €8 per person entry fee by starting off on the Ladder of Cattaro route. This track zig-zags up the mountain behind the River Gate. It is a steady climb on a firmed stone track and far easier than the 1350 steps.

Once you reach a small shack selling goats cheese and ice creams, follow the main track as it zig-zags behind the house but then follow the straight on path that starts to go down hill, via steps, to an abandoned chapel. In front of you are the walls and if you look right there is a step ladder through a gap in the walls. Once through the gap you are on the main City Wall trail about 200 steps below the peak.

The views throughout were fantastic.

You need stout shoes. Trainers or hiking shoes would be ideal. One of my sons did it in crocs and struggled. That said I saw a few wearing flip flops snd they looked good. Water is a must!

We walked down on the main trail via yhe 1350 steps. No issues.

We weren't sure whether to head up the main city walls or to go up the Ladder of Kotor, just a little bit out of town. I am pleased in every way that we chose the Ladder. The way is easier and there were almost no people around. At first we planned to just go up a little bit but we were enjoying it so we went higher and moved across so that we joined the main walls.

The only thing to watch out for (which would put some people off) is that to get between the Ladder and the main walls there was a literal ladder that we needed to climb and then scramble through a low gap. It might be that there is another way around but just thought it best to warn you.

Once we were through the gap we were rewarded with the amazing sights of Kotor from the main walls. There were so many more people and as we headed down the steps I thought they would have been much harder and less fun to climb than the way we had gone. Even better when we reached the bottom I realised that if we had come the more popular way we would have had to have paid a fee to come up (I had previously thought that was just for the summer season but it didn't look like it).

The walls themselves are amazing and the views of the bay are spectacular. The walls are lit up at night and later the same day I walked around the bay to the other side in the dark and seeing the walls lit up encircling the city was again, spectacular.

So definitely go, but choose your route carefully and see which is best for you, given the time you have.

Climbing the walls is a must. If you fit it takes max 40 min to make it to the top. Morning is a nice climb as there is no sun on that side of a bay however afternoon climb is rewarded with most beautiful sunset you can see in Montenegro 😍

It is a must, for sure. Beautiful views both to the inside of the Old City and outside over the Bay. I recommend to enter to the Old City through the River / North Gate to walk to the Gurdic / South Gate and after that to walk on the front City Walls back to the North Gate area again. You feel like the old city guard in historical time…

We walked all the way up the walls of Kotor to the top, and it was a very long climb. The views are great, and the history is interesting, but unfortunately the way up is not too well maintained, with broken pavement, graffiti on almost every surface, and decrepit shrines leading to the small chapel halfway up.
It was also very hot and there was no place to get water or to rest, except for one freelance vendor with a cooler full of overpriced water and soda. Benches, canopies for shade and someplace to get water would make this a much better experience.

Kotor Old Town is one of the highlights of Montenegro. The plazas and alleys can get very crowded; we were lucky to be there just before peak season. We didn't climb all the way up to the mountain - which is quite challenging - but we did walk on the city walls, which was a real treat. The views of the bay and the Old Town are amazing.

The incredible views along the way up and at the top make this little hillside stair climb definitely worth the sweat. It's not really shady, so best be prepared with hat and/or sunscreen if you go on a sunny day.

Depending on which side you start from, you might have to pay but also you might not have to. It's not an officially-run hike, per se, but at one entrance (I'm not sure how to describe it b/c we kind of meandered through Old Town and then found some stairs up to a turnstile being "run" by some guy) it seemed we had to pay, and then when we came down and out another entrance, there was no one collecting money. We probably could have hiked without paying, but it's worth paying for, so...

There are some nice spots along the way for a snack or picnic, while the top is pretty exposed.
