You have to wake up early in the Morning if you wish to attend the Cleaning face ceremony. You must reach to the Mahamuni Pagoda around 4.oo a.m. and only Man will allow to pay respect and attaching the gold leave at Mahamuni Buddha statue.

In the temple there is a Budda image where people (well, just men allowed...) pay respect by attaching a gold leave to the statue. It is definitelly a cultural experience worth seeing.

One of the most important pagodas in all of Myanmar. Local people come here to place gold leaves on the Buddha statue in the centre of the pagoda. Great to see the local traditions and not so many tourists (like everywhere in Myanmar) so far....More

I was at the Mahamuni Paya and managed to take pictures (with payment for camera) of devotees venerate the statue with gold leaf. A must visit for all tourists and devotees alike.

I was lucky to visit this temple in January during the time that they clean the face of this Buddha image. Very good to joined their ceremony that time.
