Aleppo was an important city from very early days, and a capital of several Muslim states since half of 10th century.

The Old Town is worth a visit mostly for the citadel with the magnificent Mamluk-era gate.
The Umayyad Mosque is quite nice, although it lost its original mosaic decoration when it was burnt by the Byzantines, and the 11-th century minaret collapsed during the recent civil war.
The bazaar (souq) is very nice, with covered narrow lanes and a lot to buy: materials, clothes, but mostly the famous natural soap of Aleppo. Interestingly, the spices' sellers sometimes form the spices inside glass in different patterns, like, for example, the flag of Lebanon etc. There are good goldsmiths all around the city, often Armenians. I value my silver cross from there, just like my wooden boxes covered in pearl mass. Sadly, the bazaar was damaged during the civil war.
The city walls are extant on in many places, with some nice gates remaining. But not everywhere.
There are some old churches and mosques, but most of them are not very interesting.

Unfortunately there is only one shop open and it has limited stock. Most of the customers have been shot or have left Aleppo. Such a shame.

A very exquisite experience in one's life, walking those narrow and very old streets of the old city which is still inhabited since thousands of years.
The stone paved roads, old Arabic houses, craftsmen and people...
The old mixed with new, restaurants and hotels in old houses, the taste and smells...

Unfortunately..., all that is gone now to the war on this country...:-(

When you walk in Aleppo in the old city you really feel like a basha or Sultan, everything you need and don't need is found there, you feel you want to stop at every place, it has tons of stories.

i have spent a couple of months in Aleppo a few years ago, and have otherwise visited the city many many times. This is a wonderful city, with one of the best preserved old markets in the Middle East. interesting as a city, because of the incredible heterogeneous population, ,Armenians (most of them are grandsons and daughters of the survivers of the massacre of 1915), Druse, Kurds, Christians of all denominations, Muslims of all denominations....
the city is fantastic. Visit the castle on top of the hill
