Lovely central square with small cathedral

This is a lovely square in central Arica, with a rather small cathedral. The cathedral was designed and build by Eiffel in France and then shipped here. Not the nicest or grandest of cathedrals, but if open (one of the few that is still regularly open since the protests started) well worth a quick look inside.

This church stands on a slight hill and dominates the area. From the outside it looked quite impressive with excellent coloured panels and intricate detail on the towers. The church clearly shows the influence of Eifel (he of the tower in Paris) with a great use of iron. Inside is more plain and not particularly ornate. Outside to the right is a small outside "chapel" dedicated as a Lourdes grotto.

Lovely Church

What makes this church so interesting is that it is not heavily guilded as you might find in other churches in South America. Perhaps that is because of Eiffels design. I am not sure, but make a trip to see it inside.

Local Tour Guide

We were recently in Arica as a port city for a cruise. We contacted Andean Duncan Tours and set up a full day excursion. The tour took us all over Arica and the neighboring valleys. The tour was with a small group (6) and was only $70 US/person. I would suggest going to their website and get a full description of their "All Day Tour" for cruise passengers for details. For lunch we went to a very local restaurant $12 US and the food was super! Enjoy!

An All-Iron Church

We visited the cathedral on a recent visit to Arica. Designed by Gustave Eiffel, the church is said to have been brought here instead of the originally intended site as the arid desert climate was more suitable for it. It is the focal point of the town center. I read that the key/plans for assembling it was once on display inside the church. But during the War of the Pacific, the key was thrown into the ocean for fear it would fall into enemy hands - namely the Chileans as the city was part of Bolivia at the time. In this way, it was thought that the enemy would be unable to disassemble and cart off the church as a trophy of war. Ironically, the Chileans simply took the entire city, so no disassembly was required for them to cart off the church.

Eiffel in Arica

An interesting structure, specially in the north of Chile were the architecture is unique to the Andean culture. The cathedral was designed by Eiffel, therefore is a metal structure which I am sure will survive many earthquakes. It is out of character with the area but still interesting.

Charming Little Church

Right near the port which is at the base of the city. You have to pass the church on the way into the city.

Better from the outside than inside

Gustave Eiffel was more known for building bridge and the Eiffel Tower, seeing a church built by the famous French engineer is quite interesting. But the roof structure inside reminds me more of a market hall than a church.
