There were a several well off families in Punta Arenas at one time as evidenced by some extroardinary mausoleums in this cemetery. It is well worth the visit if you have an hour to kill.

The Municipal Cemetery reminded me of the Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires. Rich families build lavish crypts for their loved ones. You can wander through the cemetery to admire the architecture and art on display. There are sections for different ethnic groups who colonized the...More

Fascinating and lovingly kept cemetery with impressive mausoleums. Includes a very interesting monument to the Indio Desconocido or unknown Indian, who has apparently become an icon to people who pray in his name and seek favors, much like St. Jude in North American Catholic culture;...More

It’s kind of strange for the main tourist site in town to be a cemetery, though I suppose you could say the same of Buenos Aires. It is an interesting place to walk around and quite pretty in its way. Upon entry we picked up...More

Old cemetry a short walk outside of the city center - many old trees stand amongst it, but you won't really miss out by not going

Fun to read names and check out all the different structures. Easy walk from the center of town and it's free.

It is usefull to study the map of the cemetary beforehand... I struggled to find the Indiecito for instance. Otherwise, it is a nice, peaceful place.

Regular daytime hours all days. The cemetery is used frequently by locals and we saw a brief service there while waiting for a taxi. Worth the visit since we don't have anything like this in Ontario Canada. Good for two... More

Yes - but it is a longer walk. We hiked everywhere, so it was no problem for us in the downtown area. Even if you walk slowly, it is a worthwhile visit for Canadians who have not seen this type of monumental cemetery.
