South China Sea’s Weizhou Island, located in the Golf of Tonkin, is off the beaten path and yet to be discovered by many tourist sand vacationer s. This rugged island has an area of approximately 24.75 square kilometres. It is a volcanic island, the origins of which date back to about 32 to 50 million years ago. It is a nature preserve with about 150 species of birds. Many locals appear to live off fishing in the waters of the South China Sea. This is a haven for people who wish to live a simple life, surrounded by crystal clear waters and away from the hustle and bustle of larger populated places.

I went to this island with my family during the Spring Festival.Well, this island is quite primitive and without many attractions,so I suggest you guys stay there for 2-3 days.Anyway, the time that we arrived was noon time,so we decided to go to the nearest restaurant near the coast which is called Shilu. The comment is pretty good, but the serving speed is way too slow.We waited for an hour before the food was served. But,the seafood was very FRESH and TASTY.I strongly recommand the grouper and mantis shrimp. They are WILD and very ECONMICAL.There are a couple of beautiful scenic spots, such as Crocodile Hill and Wucai Beach.I strongly suggest you walk to the best viewing platform instead of taking bus, otherwise, you will miss a lot of scenery along the way.I went to Crocodile Hill in the afternoon, and we walked a long time to the best viewing spot.I was exhausting but impressed by the gorgeous scenery. This island is definetely a great place to head for a walk to stop and take some pictures. The traffic on the island is not convenient,so i suggest you guys rent electromobile. It is the most convenient and passionate way to travel around the island. It was an awesome trip!
TIP:IF YOU WANT TO FEEL SOMETHING MORE STIMULATING,I WOULD SAY YOU SHOULD INQUIRE SOME INFORMATIONS ABOUT GOING OUT TO SEA AT YOUR INN.

Boat is fast (1h), but expensive - 120 CNY one way. You need to pay extra entrance fee of 90 CNY. Island is small and can be seen within 1 day (by bike). There are several beaches around the island, but there are no signs pointing to them (not in English at least). However the governemnt has big plans with this island - build an airport, golf center, make it more known tourist place.
However every tourist leaves a lot of trash behind them and beaches are not cleaned that good.
For English speaking company, visit Mario's bar (next to Piggybar hostel).

My girlfriend and I are just finishing up our stay from both the mainland and the island and I feel there should be a few opinions expressed before coming here.

First off the looks and hassle to buy things from the locals is over the top, be prepared for a few judging looks and to say no to a lot of things like jetskis.

If your palet favors more to a Weatern or even international taste then get ready to fast as you will fined mainly seafood or Chinese food. The very few “western” coffee shops and restaurants quality is pretty low.

Also we got a tad dissgruntled about having to wait and show an excess of documentation while being in the public spotlight in a few cases for simply obtaining boat tickets or getting into our hotel.

Take it from me guys, Sanya is much better.

I came across this restaurant by accident , the are the only ones on the island that makes great pizza , hamburgers and TBone steaks on the grill along with the fact that they use local fruit to distill their own rum , it’s the best restaurant I have eaten at in China great seafood too

Just one hour by fast ferry (luxurious) and you touch down on Weizhou Island. Fast ferry ticket cost 150 RMB per person one way plus there's an Island tax of 115 RMB that you are required to pay when entering the Island.

Weizhou Island is a marvellous place, small, where the perfumes of ancient China traditions and modern influence are mixed. So most of the inland is mainly rural and farming, coastline is just beautiful beaches, some of them really forgotten by God while few of them have at least a shop and a bar place where to sip a cold beer.

Food is definitely at the highest standard: no matter if you like meat, fish or seafood. There's a huge market at Nanwan Bay city and harbour.

There are also great bars with loud music, mainly in Nanwan Bay but also in some remote places you wouldn't expect (check my picture).

Definitely a place to visit, also because you won't find a westerner around. In my case I was number three ever to visit the Island which says it all.

Not sure how relevant the previous reviews are now as we found Weizhou island to be busy, run down (still developing) and difficult to travel in with little English spoken. As a laowai without Chinese ID it's harder to obtain boat tickets as you have to use official outlets (not all travel agents) which are harder to find and in more remote locations (with no English signage and not much English spoken). Current costs are between 120 - 240 yuen single and we were able to buy tickets the day before. Boat is fast, clean and well managed although seem to seat people in groups or couples apart a lot of the time. Arrive to a big scrum of Chinese tourists with no information signs just uniformed staff behind tables taking money and then shuttle busses to take you round the island (again no information signs/leaflets or maps). Crocodile volcanic park is pretty good and entry is included in the 90 yuen cost of the ticket onto the island. Probably worth the trip if combined with the Church and an overnight stay (we didn't attempt to organise this just went on day trip with help from hostel staff to buy ticket). It is far removed from the beach/island resort Westerners might imagine and we had travelled for 4 weeks in China already. Would only recommend the trip if have good Mandarin skills or with a guide.

Great place to relax and enjoy - we had a full day trip to Weizhou Island and did like the cleanliness of the island, the vegetation and the well organized entire environment - when we came in the beginning of June, somehow limited tourists (still the ferry was fully booked) joined however in peak seasons it might get overrun

It is a must go place. Beautiful scenery for picture, sunrise and sunset at breathtaking beach. Suggest to have private tour guide to walking around. Food and bars are very delicious and reasonably priced.

Weekends are to crowded but during the week is very enjoyable , fresh air with nice beaches to visit , most local people are very friendly and helpful , After a few days we got tired of the food because everyone seemed to sell the same thing with the same taste , then we found a fast food place that also had a western chef that made the best pizza with home made sauce , shrimp , oysters fish or traditional pizza too , he BBQ pork that the pig only eats banana and it was delicious! Fresh fish to home made French style pastry for desert and to top it of they use fresh banana , mango and other local fruits to make home made rum that was very good , from the outside you only think it's fast food but they are willing to cook anything for you at a reasonable price , most important the staff was very friendly
