This pagoda is quite unique in Mongolia. The style is from Indian Buddhism. Although it is called the "1000-Buddha Pagoda", there are actually some 1563 carvings of Buddha on its exterior walls.

Inside the Pagoda there is, sadly, nothing at all - it was all stripped-out and destroyed in the Cultural Revolution.

However, the empty interior has been used to display an ancient stone-carved Mongolian Map of the Cosmos - on Buddhist principles. Another copy of it is outside, set in the walls of the Pagoda grounds.

It was just an okay temple, the architecture was okay and the pagoda in the back was a little underwhelming. Not worth paying for a ticket to see.

The urban sprawl of Hohhot has few real attractions to offer, so the Five-Pagoda Temple may very well be one of the top attractions inside the city. Having said that, the temple pales in comparison to other grander and more historic temples dotted all over China. The influence of Tibetan Buddhism is obvious and the pagoda itself felt unique enough,... More

This is a calm and peaceful little temple quite similar to other Buddhist temples all over China, except that you can see influences of Tibetan Buddhism, Hinduism and the Mongol script all coexisting. Quite a nice vibe, but not a must see. Entrance is free and there aren't too many tourists, so a great place to cover in the afternoon.

Nice little temple, very unique in architecture compared to typical Chinese temple buildings. Loved the detailed work and hundreds of statues of Budha carved on the pagodas.

Could only see the top of the pagodas from outside. The cab driver was also not sure of the location of the pagodas themselves so expect a bit of walking around

The architecture and history of this temple will impress any visitor. Most of all the peaceful to anyone looking to reflect on the day in the busy city.

This is a must see for those who won't have a chance to visit other places in Asia, it's a beautiful blend of Chinese, Tibetan and Hindu in one surprisingly small parcel! It's all wonderfully preserved, and you are allowed to climb the very steep and narrow stairs to the top! It's not a far walk from other major attractions... More

Mostly this is a pretty average Buddhist temple except for three things: 1. The 5 towers of this temple, which is a common theme in Hindu and Indian-influenced temples (eg., Angkor Wat), is unique for China. That alone makes this a "must see" for anyone visiting Hohhot. 2. There is a pretty decent collection of gilt bronze Buddhist statues displayed... More

I have been to many temples in China and why go to this one again, almost all look same I was thinking. Especially I don't like to pay, in my opinion temples are like church in Europe, it's should be free entrance to all. Anyway my wife convince me and because we had 3 days to spend in the city,...
