A Brief Description of the Lingering Garden

Located at the outer side of the Chang Gate and built in the 21st year of the reign of Wanli under the Ming Dynasty (AD 1593), the Lingering Garden is reputed to be one of the four most famous gardens of China. In 1961 it was listed from the very first as cultural relics of national importance. Since 1997 it has been inscribed on the World Cultural Heritage List.

The Lingering Garden, covering 23,310 sq.m., is divided into the middle, eastern, western and northern parts. The middle part features fascinating landscapes and waterscapes. The eastern part is noted for its architectural beauties and limestone rockeries. The northern part is famed for its beautiful bonsai garden. And the western part boasts the mountain forest scenery and the delights of wilderness. Celebrated for its superb handling of architectural space and spatial relations, the Lingering Garden serves as a fine specimen of ancient Chinese garden and landscape design and reputably tops all the well-known gardens in Suzhou.

The Lingering Garden provides English tour guide for free every hour since 2017. You can also choose to pay for a professional English guide with different guiding route or a guiding machine. Hope that during your short stay here, you can not only satisfy your eyes, but also experience the real Chinese culture and have a better understanding of our philosophy.

The Lingering garden is truly beautiful and aptly named, because you linger in almost every section just bewildered by the beauty. My wife absolutely loved it and so did I. Entrance is ¥45 each and it is well worth it! It took us maybe 3 hours to meander through all the sections we could and we stopped and had tea... More

I went the day after the Chinese New Year and it was very very crowded. It takes maybe about an hour or two to get around the whole place. It was wonderfully decorated with New Years decorations.

This garden is smaller then the Humble Administrator Garden, but cosier and charming. Pay attention to the bonsai garden.

Although we were here in November this garden was still beautiful and interesting. I really appreciated the finer details in the garden art that could be seen in the pathways, partitions and water features. I was envious of the watercolour artists scattered throughout the grounds - what a beautiful way to spend a day!!

It was damp and raining on the day we were here. But we are able to walk around under shade. This is a great site to visit. A lot of history in this garden. It was one of the protected site in China because of the rare artifacts in here. Do hire a tour guide or audio guide. This is... More

It was a nice stop to a tour with ChinaTour.com... The grounds were peaceful and nice even though there were lots of people there. Great place for photos and a nice stroll

Yes, it is beautiful house and one can't imagine the life of the rich in that era. If you plan to visit, i recommend a guide. We learnt so much and one there's two on the principals of life that stuck with me; "round on the outside, square on the inside" and be an "empty" boat... Other than the beauty... More

These gardens are very nice, with lots of plants are rocks artfully displayed. There are many beautiful plants but no flowers as that was the style. This used to be a family house and there are several rooms that you can visit that show some period furnishings. There is also a whole section of bonsai trees that was really spectacular.... More
