Recently I visited Shandong Province, attracted by the most-spoken 1st Chinese Aircraft-carrier, I went over to Dalain by ferry from Yantai (took 7 hours, fare of RMB180.00), arriving at Dalian, I saw more and more past foreign occupation foot-prints. I went over to Lushun Port, about 45 minutes drive from Dalian City. There were Museums and Memorials, for Chinese, most of them were marks of our very painful past: The "Lushun Mass-grave" Memorial marked the most, among others. The memorial was built to record the "Lushun Massacre" happened on November 21, 1894, on that day and the next 3 days, 20,000+ local residents were massacred by Japanese Troops, the Japanese soldiers killed every soul, men, women, old, children and after the 4 days' rape, there were only 36 survivors. Those survivors not of being lucky, they were spared because they were ordered by Japanese soldiers to bury the death, on their hats, the Japanese solders wrote a note saying 'don't kill this man'. There were other foreign countries soldiers around, couldn't help but stunned by the madness act of the Japanese Troop. The mountain-high dead bodies were buried in a mass grave and the Memorial was built next to it some years later. There were a Live-Memorial not far away, a prison, where to keep all the Chinese civilian prisoners captured by Russian and then by Japanese during the Russo-Japanese War (yes, it is a good question to ask why Russo-Japanese Armies fighting on Chinese Soils) . The Chinese prisoners had done nothing wrong, the only wrong they have done were being trapped in the war-zone thus treated as spies by both side armies. According to the displays description, no prisoners were ever released alive. The prisoners were kept as cattle, cruelly tortured, then hanged by bundles. I saw before some of the BBC-Documentary on "The World At War" but this time, I visited the virtual sites. I was not able to control my emotion any longer but crying loud. As Chinese, we may forgive, but surely we can not forget. After visiting those sites, we learn freedom is not free, most of time, we pay in blood.

The place has a historical value for locals & there is barely any development in the area with old houses & fisherman village lifestyle.

Lushun, full of history. is the place of the fiercely fought Russian-Japanese war of 1904-5 which was both a naval battle resulting in the destruction of the Russian Pacific fleet and a land battle including WWI type infantry charges. The prize was the naturally safe all-season harbour when naval power was supreme. You can read Wikipedia before you visit for an overview.
The main attractions are the prison and the museum which have separate review sites on Trip Advisor. The Russian cemetery and the hills and mountains are also popular. It seems Baiyushan, the closest hill was closed to vehicles however. Hiking up is still an option.
Now you can travel cheaply and easily from Dalian by metro/train. Take line 1 to it's end at Hekou and switch trains on the same platform to Lushun (not Lushun New Port) on the new above-ground Line 12. When you arrive the touts will try to sell you a taxi for 800rmb, You should pay 200 or 300rmb for 2-4 sites and waiting time or take individual taxis to each attraction if Lushun is not busy. The taxi drivers will try to steer you to the Lushun "show" near the beautiful Russian-built railway station. It's expensive for 280 rmb and they get a kick-back. It's professionally staged all in Chinese theatre show with singing and dancing and very patriotic but it will give you an idea of the history and the Chinese mind
Supposedly Lushun is good for seafood but so is Dalian so don't go for that reason.Go for the history.

For anybody who may be reading in English. If you speak English as your first language then that must mean you are in this part of China for work. We took a day trip here just to sight see and get away from Dalian. The Russo - Japanese prison is really quite neat and the Baidu shan Mountain Tower is great to get a good view. Other than that...well....

Not sure if Lushun can be reached by train, new line may be complete. I took a tour bus from Dalian. Limited English, well organised. Make sure you take your passport to visit the fortifications and prison. The views from the fortifications are excellent and the walk is not too steep. Lushun prison is monument to Japanese inhumanity to the Chinese and Korean peoples with stories and examples of evil cruelty. It has an atmosphere of acute despair, beware!
The reptile house was interesting and we visited a film set of an old village and had lunch.

Traveling back from Lushun Prison to Dalian. Popped into Lushun Harbour for a look around at the old Russian guns and the Modern Chinese Naval fleet.

This is a great place to visit. It's less than an hour away from Dalian (depending on traffic) with a great drive down the coast.
This little town is full of history and many activities and sites to see including Baiyushan (White Jade Hill), Russian-Japan Prison, Lushun Museum, Snake Museum are just a few places and there are so many more.
There is plenty to do in Lushun and even worth a day trip (though there is way too much to see in one day!)

A nice little port town with a few remnants of some European and Japanese presence. Catch a bus from near Dalian train station to get here and walk from there. The hill and tower on top give a great view of the area (free if you walk up the side from the bus station rather than up the road - there's also a little local market on this route), and there are quite a few old buildings and monuments on the west side to explore. Local buses back to the bus station are also quite reliable and stick to the online routes.

We were in Dalian as part of a cruise. It seemed to me that the main reason to stop was for re-fueling. The tour we took included the Prison, the Museum, and the bunkers. The prison was OK; pretty grim as one might expect. The museum has a lot of great artifacts, but the day we visited it was cold and damp inside. Most of the drapes were closed, and most of the lights were off. Because of this, it was hard to enjoy. The bunkers were quite interesting. It was an OK day, but I wouldn't go out of my way to visit Dalian. (A guide with more details would probably have helped as well.)

Lushun has a pretty station and wonderful views from the top of Baiyun Hill. You can walk to the top, get a taxi or get a chair life to the top and back down again.
The Russian-Japanese prison is also well worth a visit and is near the centre of town.
The Hengshan Temple on the outskirts of Lushun is tucked away but such an amazing site. It is the largest temple in the province. The Buddha statue is fantastic. You will need to either take a taxi or the number 23 bus from the railway station to the Heishijiao stop(about 80RMB) and then take the shuttle bus to Da Shi Dong Tun.

Do you know of a reasonably priced day tour from Dalian - or good public transport?
