I visit Datong city wall November 2020 and it was very pleasant experience. Basically just me and my friend there. No rush no crowd just enjoyable wandring around wall. City wall itself is well rebuild and top of it can see old datong as well as new part of Datong. Rent bike is also available and recommed if want to see whole wall.

Apparently the walls have been fully restored and the plan is to build a traditional Chinese city within the walls as a tourist attraction. I visited on a very cold (-12C) December day, and once I’d found the access point pretty much had the whole wall to myself. You can hire a bike for 30RMB and ride the whole way round; it’s a 4 mile total ride but the views are worth it. I was told to take my passport for ID but wasn’t asked to show it on the day; it could be because it was mid-winter and not many visitors. I’ve done the walls at Xi’an as well and would rate the Datong ones better overall.
