I visit Datong city wall November 2020 and it was very pleasant experience. Basically just me and my friend there. No rush no crowd just enjoyable wandring around wall. City wall itself is well rebuild and top of it can see old datong as well as new part of Datong. Rent bike is also available and recommed if want to see whole wall.

We first walked a shorter area to take photos of the old structures & different city views for 1st hour. We then rented a tandum bike ( for 2 ) and rode completely around the wall. The basic rental price allowed 90 minutes . We are seniors and haven't rode a bike for a decade. We only took about 1.2 hours as we did only a few stops for photos. It was less expensive this way.

Standing on this wall, i cant help but imagine rows of archer, guns, cannons, and soldier trying to defend the city from invaders... such a gigantic and majestic wall, worth visiting.
the view from the top is impressive as well. there are alot of wooden towers, apparently built using authentic traditional material and technique, worth checking as well.

The wall is intact all four sides compare to Xian's old wall. The Yunzhong Courtyard where we stayed is within the city wall.

This city wall was re-built on the original location using brakes to cover up the old and almost vanished mud-piled city wall . The city wall started 1600s years ago at Beiwei dynasty, so was the Yungong Grottoes. Now 80% are reconstructed and basically it's is free to get to the top and walk around the whole city wall. You can also take a electric car to circle the wall with fees Just beautiful.

As long as you know ahead of time that it is not actually the ancient wall and was built in recent years, it is interesting to look at, provides some different views of the city and is impressive in size and speed of construction. It sort of feels like a new Great Wall, but flat. It is helpful to understand the history and purpose of the ancient city wall to see the impact this modern city wall has on the city and its history.

These huge city walls are a part of an almost unreal effort by the local government to turn the entire old city of Datong into a theme park. They were reconstructed entirely as the foundation of a multi-billion dollar effort to relocate hundreds of businesses and hundreds of thousands of residents out of the old city to be replaced by a costumed theme park. Nothing like this would be possible anywhere else in the world. The amount of time and money being spent to accomplish this is almost unimaginable. The goal is to turn this once polluted coal city into a tourist attraction and a walk along these impressive walls is a good start.

I went in the evening and saw the differences in view between day and night. Lightings to the interval towers are switched on as night falls. Surreal and romantic.
Bring along your passport. It is free to get up but require a show of id. Closes at 10pm. There are couple bicycles for rent up there. One round is 7.2km, so I heard.

Our tour guide suggested that we visit the city walls in the evening to see the lights and the city and we were so glad we did. At the top you can also rent bikes and we ended up renting a 4-wheeled bike that was a blast to ride on the top of the wall.
