The better part of three hours of our day was spent at the Xinjiang Regional Museum in Urumqi recently and it was time well spent for sure. Small but well set up museum, bright and labeled for ease of everyone, the mummies are really the...More

I was surprised by just how much was on offer, and although a bit short of time I really enjoyed the brief visit. There's plenty of historical/ archaeological remains and a good account of the Silk Road and what it meant / means.

Went to this museum mainly to see the mummies. Was'nt disappointed. Mummies are in good conditions. You can really view them closed up. Photo taking allowed but without flash. Worth visiting.

The exhibits are well displayed but if you don't read Chinese a lot is lost. The most interesting of all were the mummies that have been wonderfully preserved. Even more interesting than those in the British Museum. There's nit much to do in Urumqi, so...More

This is an interesting regional museum. Of particular interest are the mummies- real ones from 2000-4000 years ago, not like the Egyptian ones. Also very interesting is are the ethnic exhibits to see how the different people of the region live/lived

This is a great ethnographic museum. There are 5 viewing halls on two floors. Unless you absolutely have to see mummies, you can see the necessary stuff on the bottom floor. It is a great educational opportunity. We spent 2 hours and could have stayed...More

This well laid out museum has about 5 sections. The ethic section is pleasant, and the mummies macabre, but the highlight is the ancient history section, particularly the stunning artefacts from Astana Cemetary - wonderful pottery and paper cuts. One of the best things to...More

Unlike mummies in Egypt and elsewhere, the corpses found in Xinjiang were dried and preserved naturally. This means many retain their original features, including skin. The level of preservation in some of them are amazing.

I found this museum to be very well laid out, and there were a lot of different exhibits. It was interesting to see the mummies and learn about the different ethnic groups. We had a tour guide, but most of the exhibits did have English...More

One section on the ground floor has some ancient history--from arrowheads to dried dumplings to jade things. The other section has the large cultural exhibits. There are life-sized yurts and furniture for the 13 ethnic groups from Xinjiang province, as well as costumes. The display...More
