We had enough "balls" to come to this market South of Cartagena. Even the taxi was telling me not to come here. I said "padelante", I was born in Hialeah and walked the roads of Medellin many times. Colombian folks love me and treat me with respect. Im not afraid of them and they have no intention to harm me/us.... More

I've read a few reviews that call this place inauthentic, or a tourist trap, but I would strongly disagree. Granted, the location is dirty, horribly so in parts (there are sections that go from standard Latin American strip mall, all the way down to outdoor market with garbage, dogs, and abject poverty) chaotic, possibly unsafe, etc, but it offers a... It's an open market with fruits, veggies, meat parts, fish and herbs. English is not widely spoken here so be prepared or know exactly what you're looking to buy. I had a great time chatting with the older ladies and trying not to get run over by carts barreling their way down the maze of narrow walk ways. Nearby there... More

We decided make a quick stop at the Mercado Bazurto, as we enjoy going to markets, shopping malls, grocery stores, etc. when we visit new cities. The market received mixed reviews from travelers, but we decided to go anyway. We took a taxi from San Felipe de Barajas and the taxi driver spent most of the ride over reminding us... More

I'm admittedly biased, but I love big dirty markets where everyone is busy and alive and vibrant. I love to photograph the goods and the people and animals at work. It's all so colorful. U don't mind the puddles, the smells, the dirt.

This should be considered one of the "must do" things in Cartagena. The fish, fruit, and meat zones in the market are really cool, and challenge any North American squeamishnesses about hygiene and cleanliness in meat, poultry, and seafood preparation. The place is large, but not difficult to find your way out from at any point. It also didn't strike... More

I have been here twice, once alone, and once with a friend. When I went alone people were friendly and helped me to get around because it is so big! You can buy really cheap fruits, vegetables and fish here. I bought big shrimps for eqvivalent 7$/kg!!!!! I will come back to get fresh food here but with a friend,... More

But not in a good way. Think of a massive dirty flea market. Lonely Planet says it's for the adventurous--nonsense--it's more like for the easily amused. You want knockoff brand name underpants? This is the place.

This market is busy, dirty, smelly and interesting..but don't try it on your own. You need a guide. It is huge and there are rarely tourists wandering around. The food is interesting but after that it is just electronics and knock off sports wear. However, it is good to get out of the old city and see how real Cartagena... More
