- Tom LSan Jose del Cabo, Mexico8 contributionsWonderfully full sensory experience of coffeeThe tour was enjoyable, educational, and experiential! Walter was our guide and he took us through a journey of coffee and of the farm. The context you take away from it will help you appreciate every cup of coffee that you drink from here on. Beyond the coffee itself, the farm and the farm house was an elegant walk back in time, and a living museum. There is also a great view of Medellin that comes with the tour. Well worth the visit, and it supports small businesses by cutting out the corporate middle men.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten November 22, 2023
- IrvBellevue, Washington5 contributionsMust-do experience outside MedellinThis tour exceeded our expectations. We learned a lot about the history of coffee and how it started in Colombia. In addition, our guide Dani and Alexa taught us the process from planting, harvest, filtering, drying, roasting, and then tasting. We got to harvest our own coffee fruit in the hills and understand the art and complexity of the entire process. The lovely people at the farm cooked us a wonderful home-cooked meal where all the ingredients came from the farm. At the end, we did a tasting tour and tried various coffee - with the natural and honeyed our favorite. Highly recommend this tour, and shoutout to Dani for being such a fantastic guide. 5/5Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten January 2, 2024

Our hotel booked this tour for us, (Hotel 574 - fantastic!), and we did not know what to expect. We thought we would be going on a bus but we actually had a driver pick us up and drive us up there. It was just the two of us that day and what a wonderful experience.
The setting is beautiful, up in the mountains of Santa Elena. We had the manager/guide Elizabeth to ourselves. She is a lovely woman and being able to chat with her the whole time really added to the experience. We had to dress up in ponchos and hats, (I was a bit sceptical at first, but I got into it), and we walked through the whole process on the farm from start to finish - well almost, the beans are sent away for roasting.
We had lunch in the house with Elizabeth and her father-in-law. That was delicious and really enjoyable. I'd love to know how they cooked the pork. It was divine! After lunch we had a coffee tasting and we got to taste the difference between the ways the beans were processed/dried etc. after harvesting.
This was one of the best days out we had from Medellin. Elizabeth is a wonderful host and I would definitely recommend this trip as a 'must do'.

La Casa Grande has recently opened up the Hacienda for short stays and my friends and I were lucky enough to book the two biggest rooms while we were there. Our rooms (the principal and media) each had a queen sized bed, desk, and their own private bathroom. These rooms are also connected by a common room that serves as sort of a study with bookcases and desks. The media room also has a connecting door to another room with two single beds. The rooms were not originally built to be bedrooms (as it was a coffee house), so there are many doors and windows, the rooms. If you are someone who requires blackout curtains or complete darkness to sleep, no fear! The wooden windows and doors pretty much block out most, if not all the light. Great for hibernating. The beds are pretty comfortable, and they provide extra blankets as it can get a little cold at night. The bathrooms are pretty basic, and the hot water for the shower can get be a little tricky, but it was fine in fulfilling its intended purpose. I got the impression that toilet paper isn't typically flushed in South America, so something to take note of.
In terms of meals, breakfast is included in your stay, and it is typically cooked by the lovely Marina, who always manages to surprise. Every meal was truly delicious, especially when you know that many of the ingredients (in particular the vegetables) are grown on the property or neighboring farms. Do not forget to try Don Pablo's 'secret' oil concoction that can be used at literally every meal! I have tried since to replicate it, but unfortunately I cannot seem to get the exact flavors. Lunch can be included at a small cost, and although dinner is not available, you have the option of using the kitchen to cook your own!. As the hacienda is up on Mt Elena, I would recommend doing a trip down into the city (or perhaps on your way back from a day trip in the city) to grab some groceries for the length of your stay so you are able to cook a meal when needed.
Our hosts on the property have owned the hacienda for generations and the history shows. Everyone is very friendly, and the head of the house, Don Pablo, is always happy to talk about the history of the house. The family also live on the property, so in the event you have any issues or questions, they are easily and quickly addressed. Elizabeth was also great at providing recommendations and addressing all our logistical concerns. She effectively manages the coffee tours and touristy aspect of the house, and was our guide on the coffee tour - as you can imagine, she has great insight about the process, beans, and everything to do with the house as well. One night we even had a little dominoes party with the requisite Aguardiente! Anyone who stays here should expect to be treated like one of the family.
What else? Well, those planning to stay should also be aware that the property has a bunch of pets - 4-5 dogs, 1 cat, a couple cows, pigs, and chickens! The farm animals are mostly out of sight, but the dogs and cats have reign of the property. In particular, Lola, the cutest little puppy runs about wherever she pleases. If you have allergies, you should be wary and be sure to have your antihistamines at hand, and be sure to give lots of love to the pups. The only downside of the hacienda were the mosquitoes or sandflies. They really come out at night, and the way the bites have stuck around I'm not convinced they're your average mosquitoes. There's plenty of bug spray around, but be warned!
Between the view, fresh air, amazing hospitality, food, and relaxation, there's not too much more you could want. Love this place and can't wait to come back for another relaxing stay.

I chose this tour because it felt more authentic than many of the coffee tours in MedellĂn which are clearly artificial plantations designed for tourist entertainment (although I'm sure those are fun too!). Casa Grande is a 7th generation hacienda and genuine historic home, so while there's no "coffee spa" or swimming pool, it's beautiful, calm, and authentic.
I visited today for the coffee tour, booked directly via WhatsApp, and this was a perfect half day adventure. It's worth going for the views of MedellĂn alone, which are spectacular, but if you're remotely interested in coffee, you'll learn lots too (and enjoy the beautiful historic house, almost 200 years old). Our kind guide was very patient with the group's many questions and nothing was too much trouble. We learned the basics of coffee production, then went out into the plantation to pick some coffee cherries, processed them by hand, and visited other production areas, including drying and roasting to learn about the full process. After a lunch break, an absolutely delicious meal served family style in the house, we had the opportunity to taste several coffees and understand how the different processing styles affect the flavour. Say hi to the goat, dog and cats too!

The best tour of our trip!! We were picked up from a super convenient location in El Poblado. The tour was fun, interactive and informative. Probably the best lunch we had while in Medellin. My husband is a vegetarian and they were super accommodating and gave him an excellent veggie option for lunch. The property was beautiful and pretty close to the city! Our tour guides Dani, Valentina and Alexa were so fun and made us really feel at home. We cannot recommend this tour enough!

An amazing experience not only for the adults, but our 2 boys (13,11) loved it as well. The farm, the location, the view and the staff were informative, fun and simply a pleasure.

As a bit of a coffee fanatic and a home roaster I have been wanting to visit a coffee farm for well over a decade. This experience did not disappoint. Elizabeth was an outstanding host and tour guide. Although I was somewhat familiar with the concepts of picking and processing coffee it was great to experience to see it live and I learned so much. I also enjoyed, with Elizabeth's guidance, tasting the various edible plants as we toured. I had never heard about half of those plants. I hope to find wasabi lettuce again one day.
The setting was beautiful and the home made lunch was delicious. Tasting the final product at the end of the tour was a great touch. The coffee is excellent. I am grateful to Elizabeth for sharing her knowledge and putting up with my multiple questions.

What an amazing day we had here on the plantation. It’s a super peaceful setting right outside of MedellĂn and the plantation is beautiful. We learned a ton about Colombian coffee and had a unique experience picking, planting and trying different coffees. The lunch that was served was phenomenal and completely farm to table. They made pickup and drop off as easy as possible and were so happy we got to experience this tour.
