About
The Metrocable is a gondola lift that links the city center with the surrounding hillside communities. More than just an efficient mode of transportation, it is also a convenient and affordable way to see Medellin, offering breathtaking views of the city and surrounding countryside. Your regular metro ticket covers the cost of the 30-minute ride, and you can take the trip multiple times as long as you do not exit the station. The hilltop residents make their daily commute on the Metrocable so it can get busy during peak hours. And take note of the timing of the last car from the top. – Tripadvisor

Great way to see the communities, take the tram to access the cable cars, also a great way to see the city. Very safe!Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten March 6, 2024
- Martha M5 contributionsGreat views no matter what time of dayWe were planning on taking others' recommendations and doing a cable car ride at sunset, but thankfully, our Comuna 13 guide warned us not to go at rush hour, which included sunset this time of year, which was smart since it is a mode of regular transportation for commuters. Instead we did the San Javier station ride mid-morning and it was definitely worth doing, especially considering the low fare! The views were expansive and the whole ride up and back only took about 30 minutes.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten July 5, 2024

We read and heard so much about the metro system in Medellin and was looking forward to using it around the city; especially excited about taking the metrocable for nice views of the city.
We inquired with our hotel concierge and he gave us fairly simple directions on taking the A line to one of the nicer metrocables in Medellin. Upon entering the Aquacatala metro station close to our hotel, I was surprised to not find automated kiosks to purchase tickets. Like most metro systems in the world, there are usually machines to make this process more streamlined and also able to translate process of purchase in different languages. We had no choice but to purchase tickets at the ticket booth (Taquilla). This presented a bit of a challenge with the language barrier but luckily the attendant spoke english. I explained to him where I wanted to go and he quoted me about 50,000COL which at first seemed a bit high but I thought maybe there was a separate ticket for the metrocable and also the cost of the plastic key card needed to use the metro so I didn't really think twice when I handed him the cash. I didn't realize I was taken till after when we still had some 40,000COL in the card after returning from Santo Domingo? I am not sure what the attendant had to gain by swindling us and making us purchase 50,000COL in metro credit! I was disappointed in myself for not questioning why it would cost so much, but not being fluent in Spanish it would have been pointless.
At any rate, we were scammed at the Aquacatala metro ticket booth so beware when purchasing tickets bc they do not have automated kiosks!!!
This was such an unfortunate incident that left a very sour taste in our visit to Medellin! We were there to support the city and experience the metro which the city of Medellin seems so proud of but this incident with this ticket attendant left a really bad impression. I felt that a city/state worker should know better than to con tourists that try and use the metro system. Come to think of it, it probably would have been cheaper and faster to just take a taxi/Cabify to the Acevedo metro stop and take teh cable car from there. If this happened, with say, a cab driver, I would have probably let it go but for a city/state employee to do this is despicable!

For no additional cost beyond your metro ticket, you can ride the cable cars up and over the rising hills around Medellin at San Javier Station and Acevedo. Sounds from the streets below can be heard as you float above the ramshackle homes that cling to the mountainside.
You can choose to get out at one of the stops along the way or simply sit tight and ride your car all the way back to the valley below.
An unexpected surprise was getting to know my cable-car mates on the ride up. I had brief conversations with locals and met some fellow travelers who shared stories and tips. Being trapped in a box with strangers is a great way to make new friends, especially when they cram eight of you in at a time.

Looking for an inexpensive day out we decided to pay a ride visit to the Arvi Park via the Metrocable. To do this we boarded a train at Poblado metro station and traveled to Acevedo station, from where without leaving the station, we transfer to a cable car that whisked us over the roof tops of the less fortunate to the Santa Domingo cable station.
Once at Santa Domingo we boarded the gondola for the longer ride at 10 miles an hour, way up and over the hills to Arvi Park. These Metrocable system was opened in 2004 and moves about 30,000 people a day up and down the valley sides.
All the gondolas are equipped with sola light and communication system, and are designed to carry 8 small people, so when boarding choose your fellow passenger carefully, we had a modern family with two restless young children.
Once at the park we discovered a Sunday farmers market, with lots of indigenous food and gifts stall. The Parks adventure hiking trails were well marked and seemed easy, but we resisted the temptation and settled for Lunch and a beer.
Catching an early gondola back before the weekend rush, do make sure you are facing the sun, for its better to wear sunglass than burning you neck for the length of the ride back.
Tip: There is no air-conditioning in the Metrocable Gondolas, so on hot days go early and take a fan.

So I have been watching them build this new Line P metrocable for the past 3 plus years and decided today to ride it to it's end at El Progreso and so glad I did.
This was just opened this month of June 2021 and I must say what a great engineering and construction this new cable car is. It runs about 2.80 km and connects with the existing metroat Station Aceveda and ends up the mountain at El Progreso.
The ride one way takes about 15 to 20 minutes but the views are great. They are still working on the finishing touches around the new stations but but admit how impressed I am with the quality of this cable cars and everything associated with it.
Take a ride up and see for yourself. The people (paisa) of Medellin should be proud of this new cable car.

This is THE only city in the World that uses cable cars as a means of public transportation. The system runs really smoothly, is very efficient, and by passes all the traffic. It is also incredibly cheap to use, and well worth the spectacular views of the Comuna and the city in the valley below. One of the coolest experiences have ever had!

Not only a different experience itself, the metrocable riding Will give you time, security and confort to calmly observe the comunity reaping the benefits of it. You’ll be able to see kids playing on the streets, kids on school time, people coming Back from work in a convenient way.
Quick top:
The metrocable balances a bit. I’d recommend not sitting on the “backwards seeing “ bench If you get dizzy often

What an amazing public transport system. Medellin had businesses that needed more employees to help the city economy. There are thousands of low income residents who live high up on the sides of the valley, where the land is cheap. So, the city built this new system of gondolas that climb up the sides on the valley and give those residents a rapid way to get to jobs in the valley and return home. This is very impressive municipal strategy, and it seems to be working - the city is booming.
On one side of the valley the gondolas even go up to a National Park! The views from the gondolas are beautiful and the attendants are polite and very professional
When you visit, this is a must-do experience.

Went on the K line, it is so cheap and well worth a visit to see Medellin from above.
The queue can get big from the station where metro train station meets the metro cable car station but it moves quick.
We were waiting approx 20mins in a queue. But it was worth it for the experience.

This is a very safe trip for Tourists. The train is clean and on time. After a walk up some stairs you will go to the metrocable for no extra costs. The views of City and Graffiti are incredible. The silence up in the air is meditative. Once you are in line for the second cable to Parque Arvie , another ticket or more money will be taken from your metro card. The views above the Wilderness and Fresh cool air are worth every peso.

As many people say, the best ride is joining the cable car from within Acevedo metro train station and first leg included in the fare you’ve already paid for. We did then take the cable car all the way onto Park Avri, had underestimated how far it was (& colder!). But worth the views and very few people doing that leg, nice way to see the greener side of Medellin.

If a group of people wanted to ride the Metrocable at around 8 how safe would this be? How late is it open? Is the view worth it?
Written January 10, 2023
Hi, It's open in the schedule:
Line L
Tue a Sat: 9:00 a. m. – 6:00 p. m.
Sun and Holidays: 8:30 a. m. - 6:00 p. m.
* No service the first work day of the week (if you know Colombia you'd know we have lots of holidays on Monday).
Because it's not open, you wouldn't be able to do it, although, in terms of security, you can go to Arvi anytime during the night to camp. Some people mentioned being robbed but I think it's quite safe.

Buenas tardes gente!

Can you bring large luggage on the metro cable? I assume there may be a charge, I just don't want to show up with luggage and not be able to ride. Was hoping to spend the night at Arvi park if the luggage isn't an issue. Also I just found out today (Monday) that the metro cable is shut down on mondays for maintainance.
Thank you!

I am not 100% confident but there appears to be more than enough space on the metro cable....people are relatively easy going. I am not sure how "big" is big but I would say that a normal suit case (15-20 kilos) would not be an issue.
