The Old Gateway or Roman Arch is not a Roman arch as was once presumed, but...

The Old Gateway or Roman Arch is not a Roman arch as was once presumed, but was in fact the main entrance to the central compound of the Roman Tarsatica in late antiquity, an ancient town on whose ruins medieval Rijeka was built. The instincts of Rijeka’s populace in calling this ancient monument simply the Gateway have been proved right, the epithet Roman Arch being gradually accepted since Classicism, when it started to be documented and researched. This Principia was the main centre, supply base and the starting point of the Alpine enclosure, composed of scores of kilometers of protective walls, turrets, guard-houses and larger fortifications usually on high ground which were able to signal to one another, all built with the aim of blocking barbarian incursions towards Italy, the centre of the Roman Empire.

Splendidly preserved archway

Splendid archway surrounded by lots of modern building, quite unusual. We found it by accident as we were walking around the city.

If history and culture is what you're after amongst classic or very modern pubs this is a short walk to sight see! It's not extravagant and if you don't appreciate history have a seat and coffee while your other group members enjoy!

Beautiful Roman Arch with pleasant plaza with some bars hidden behind the City tower. The Old Gateway or Roman Arch is not a Roman triumphal arch, as was once presumed, but a representative main entrance to the centre of the Late Antique command compound of the Roman Tarsatica, an ancient town on whose ruins the medieval Rijeka was built.

I love history but this is not much. All in all it's nice to walk the pedestrian area and coming upon this is nice, but by no means worth hunting down and looking for.

This massive Roman stone archway once was the entrance to the military command center. It is the oldest monument in Rijeka and the starting point for visiting the Roman excavations which are now part of newly opened Archeological Park.

Interestng arch from the ancient Roman Empire in the middle of the city. I just wondering how did it survive the last centuries.

It feels odd reviewing a stone archway, since that's literally all there is to see here, but that said it makes for atmospheric photos and architecturally speaking is quite interesting. As my partner pointed out, it looks like it should collapse on some poor, unwitting tourist's head at any minute ;) A little further up the alley is the site... More

Leads into the old town and in a way connects various parts including St. Vitus and the Korzo. Interesting information about the gate placed nearby as is a small museum of artifacts. Everytime they dig in the area they find something it seems.
