This is the THE EXPERIENCE of the trip! We were able to actually play with the Sea Lions as they came up to us snorkeling in their territory. They were clearly "happy" to see us and readily swam up to us--looked into our face mask, and then performed for us--to encourage us to play with them. They are absolutely wonderful swimmers, and can put on a great show up close and personal. If you are willing to "perform" for them (which means that you have to dive deep, roll over in the water, do summer salts, and not be afraid of them), they will bump into you, hit you with a flipper and keep playing as long as you want to do so! It is so incredible to interact with a wild animal and not be scuba diving. It was a lot of fun--something that I had never done.

We also saw some HUGE sea turtles that we could approach and let them bump into us. We could actually push them out of our way and they could hardly notice! They were very interested in grazing and we were a mere inconvenience to them!

The number of small sharks was impressive--they were constant companions on the snorkel trip. We also saw huge schools of fish in large "balls" that were amazing. The wall was a perfect place for the rays to "sail by" below us. There were Eagles, Goldens and some I did not recognize. They are beautiful to see swimming in the wild. There were so many of them that we lost count!

The water was very comfortable and the clearity was at least 75 feet. All in all, it was probably the best snorkeling experience I have ever had.

To fully appreciate this place, one should first read Margret Wittmer's autobiographical account of homesteading here in 1932: Floreana, A Woman's Pilgrimage to the Galapagos. When the Wittmers came, they could hope for a ship to appear perhaps once a month--or less frequently. It's quite a tale.

We took the "chicken truck" (a wooden bench seat roofed, open-sided "bus" up the road from Puerto Velasco Ibarra into the heart of the higlands where we explored the pirates' rock fortress hideout; the spring that supplies the freshwater for the island, making it habitable (not common in the Galapagos); the site of the infamous Baroness's abode; the caves where the Wittmers began their lifelong stay; the Easter Island-like stone face that Heinz Wittmer admitted he carved, agricultural fields and groves, and the tortoises (probably descendants, mostly hybridized) that are the only ones now on Floreana, gifts brought to Frau Wittmer from several islands to celebrate her 50th birthday.

This is a special trip within a special visit to the Galapagos. Arrange it, if at all possible!

Our excursion to Isla Floreana entailed a 2 hour each way boat trip from Puerto Ayora, Santa Cruz. Isla Floreana is very quiet and only has a population of ~200 people. Things to visit here include La Loberia (20 minute walk from the jetty) where we saw no seals but 6 sea turtles, the black sand beach and our first and only Red Marine Iguana sighting, The tortoise park and the early cave dwellings of the original human inhabitants. After Chato Ranch on Santa Cruz the tortoise park was our second favourite.

A change for something different. The walk was great and amazing story of a family who used to take shelter in the Pirate Cave. The views of the island from the top was great too.

As a local of the Galapagos islands and a member from Floreana island I recomend to visit el "Asilo de la paz" an interesting place that involves pirates, colonization and misterious stories, if you are looking to conect with the nature and feel relaxed, this is the place!

The tortoise reserve has the recently repatriated Floreana tortoises (had feared to have been extinct until recently) and also larger hybrid tortoises. It´s a very easy walk with a clear path. It´s a question of luck whether you get to see the tortoises up close or not - depending on how close they are to the path.
From this reserve, you continue up to the rocks from where the fresh drinking water originates. Then onto the labyrinth of rocks and the caves where the first settlers lived. Great views from here.

We had a great tour here, we saw many wonderful sights. We got to see one of the few fresh water sources in all the islands. The boat ride can be rough so be prepared but we thought it was worth the ride.
