Access over lava fields following a long hike up a mud road to Sierra Negra Rim. The Lava fields are photogenic but wear sturdy footwear or blisters will prevail. the route is well signposted and you climb to the rim of Chico the other side, we then had a rest before returning the same way.
Views of the crater from here were reasonable but it became extremely busy with other tour groups turning up and it wasn't the most comfortable place to sit (ie on sharp lava rock).
The final climb back up the other side of the lava field is quite steep.
Check the pace of the tour as ours was rushed due to other people booking other things, maybe select a personal trip or get a small group together yourself so you can take your time and have things explained as your go along. Our trip was spoilt by this!
Remember rainwear/sunscreen and go to loo before leaving start - there are no facilities after and few places to hide away!

After climbing the Sierra Negra it is worthwhile to go a little further and visit the CHICO as well . We could see the lava trail and other fascinating volcanoes holes and such

Smaller volcano at the edge of Sierra Negra volcano. Volcano was active several months ago, so you can see quite new lava channel there.

Great for young folks and avid hikers. Extremely beautiful views....and the rim trail on the volcano is simply awesome. Half a day activity. Have faith in getting a good guide and take plenty of water. If older, or out of shape - avoid. But a photo book and read about it.

Hiking up Volcan Chico is definitely worth the trip. The view into the crater is amazing--you can see the entire rim around the crater and lava flows from different eruptions. It's not a strenuous hike, and you can seek plants and birds along the way. A nice change from other days spent on beaches and in water.

Very long hike when combined with Volcano Sierra Negro, but worth it if you're in pretty good shape. I think both hikes were about 9-10 miles when combined. Beautiful landscape, but very rocky, so where good hiking shoes. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen and a hat.
