We visited Punta Pitt as a day trip from San Cristobal Island on the Galapagos Party Boat. That is just the name of the boat, it was just an excursion boat. Attentive captain and crew, knowledgeable naturalist. It was a rather difficult climb—I will rate it a 4 out of 5–but the views and the wildlife were worth it. There was a snorkeling or scuba diving experience included with the trip. I would recommend this trip if you are on San Cristobal. We booked the excursion through Sharksky. They provided walking sticks which were very helpful.

My husband and I went on a day trip up to Punta Pitt only due to a last minute change of plan by our dive operator and I am so pleased we didn't miss it. The journey there passes some incredible volcanic scenery, a great view of Kicker Rock and Cerro Brujo. We spent the morning diving around an islet off the coast home to a colony of sea lions and had the most amazing time swimming with the pups, white tips and rays. In the afternoon, our naturalist guide took us for a walk onto the beach and up onto the cliffs to see the bird life. You could not miss the blue footed boobies who were nesting everywhere including in the middle of the trail! We saw their courtship rituals which was totally unexpected as well as seeing one of three eggs hatching in one nest, which we our guide told us he had never seen before. We also saw frigates, red footed and masked boobies too. The walk was hot and up a steep path, but not too long. On the way back we were joined by a huge pod of dolphins and a breaching manta ray. It was an amazing day.

Our hike to Punta Pitt started with a wet landing and then proceeded inland. Good hiking shoes are useful on this walk, be sure to bring a towel so you can have your shoes off when disembarking in a wet landing and then clean your feet before putting your shoes back on for a hike.
Unlike many of the stops in the southern Galapagos, this one has a pretty lengthy inland walk. You can walk most of the way but some parts are much more of a climb where balance (or the use of hands) is important. Be alert while hiking. It's easy to be distracted by the breath taking views and the wildlife.

Punta Pitt is a volcanic terrain at the northeastern tip of San Cristobal, the easternmost island at Galapagos. The hike up to the plateau is quite steep at times and strenuous to the weak of heart and the sedentary type. In fact one senior gentlemen in our group fell hard on slippery ground and luckily did not hurt himself much other than getting a shock and had to wait to be escorted back downhill. So while good hiking shoes is a must, you have to assess your own stamina before making the attempt. But the climb I must tell you is absolutely worth the while since you will see many bluefooted boobies right on your trail hatching their eggs and then red footed boobies which we have not seen on any of the other islands also nested on trees off the cliff along our path. These sightings really made our day and of course the view from the top of the plateau was also breathtaking.

Our first stop on these cruise is Pitt Point (Punta Pitt) situated on the north eastern tip of the island. Arrive in the morning, our guide said we're going to walk for an hour to a canyon. When we approaching I haven't seen the canyon I only see a small rock, but when we get to the point is going up gradually to a steep walk.
Pitt Point is popular area for snorkeling, but also offer beautiful walks through a partially volcanic landscape. This is a good place to see blue and red footed boobies
When we get off the zodiac we passing to the beach where the sea lions are lying, they thought we're going to take their place, they're became wild and they scream.
A steep path leads up to the cliff and through a fascinating gorge, steep rock walls where you see trees growing on the way, as we up there I see is a very dry area my white shoe is became brown from dust of the earth. Pitt Point is well worth a visit, it has beautiful landscape and you also have magnificient view of the shore.
Pitt Point is one of ideal place to see Blue-red footed bobbies, we're lucky to come on the right moment we saw some of blue-red- footed nestling. The bird is very tame did not have the fear which are adapted to predation by mammals. The blue-footed boobies is a more or less monogamous animal. The courtship is as follows: the male impress the female by stamping his feet to flutter its wings and beak for stabbing in the air. When the female is impressed she struts around a few times back and forth and then proceeding to mating, is funny to watch
The red-footed booby is the same as blue footed is reconizable with its red feet, and a blue-gray bill, also comes in various locations, but is much less common than blue footed. They usually sit near other gannets and usually in groups.
There are two forms of these red footed: a white, a small mask booby, and a gray-brown (including under wing). The adult either with a white tail, but immature and intermediate forms can be confused with other footed of gannets. The red footed nested different than blue footed, this boobies rather nested in a tree

You must hire a guide with you to see this area and the boat ride to get there is long but it is definitely worth it. I can not express with words how beautiful everything is there, you must see it with your own eyes!

From the interpretation center, the path takes us to a well-maintained trail towards the coast. I do not know how long but we hiked a good (almost) two hour hike all along the different viewpoints. These viewpoints are a slight climb up and gives you a 180 degree view of the ocean, a snorkel spot below, watch the frigate birds, blue footed boobies and pelicans hover around the water and dive into the water for their food. We also saw the sea lions and other free spirited living creatures all flying and enjoying their lives in their natural habitats. There was also a view of the “kicker rock” in the background and a statue of Charles Darwin in one of the viewpoints. From there, we heeded left towards the beach to Playa Brava. There is a watch tower and a sea lion on the stairs. Sea lions and iguanas camouflaged themselves on the rocks in the shore. Some of the sea lions are resting under the mangroves on the shore. It was so cool to see all the fauna so tame because they know they cannot be harmed. It was a morning well spent.

Another wet landing but on a sparkly beach. Tiny peridots make the sand sparkle like diamonds. We saw 2 young sea lions playing with a hiking stick dropped by another visitor. Our guide was able to retrieve it. The trail up the hills is a bit tricky in places, especially for large guys like me. There are spiky shrubs to catch your arms and neck if you're not careful. When you hit the crest, the winds can be strong so make sure your hat is on tight. This location is known for all 3 varieties of boobies. We saw blue footed boobies nesting on the ground and red footed boobies nesting on the bushes. We didn't see any Nazca boobies nesting, but there were a few flying around us. This was the only place where we saw all of them.
A few of our group had a nice time swimming at the beach and cavorting with some sea lion pups.

Snorkeled a very private beach area with thousands of different fish. Great place to photograph blue footed boobies, sea lions, and Sally Lightfoot crabs. The bay area was calm and sea lion babies swam right with us! Also, a small rock island has the largest colony of red footed boobies as their nesting area. There were numerous birds on this island -- pelicans, magnificent frigatebirds, blue and red footed boobies, oystercatchers, and more. Spent almost entire day here.

I'm almost hesitant to write this review because Punta Pitt is so beautiful, I would hate for anything to ruin this slice of heaven. You have to take a naturalist guide with you to see this area and the boat ride to get there is long but it is definitely worth it.

How challenging is this hike? I read reviews that it’s steep rocky terrain and my boat operator rated it demanding. I’m worried whether I can make it to the top
Written August 23, 2022
It is rather challenging. We are 72 and 69 years young. Our operator lent us walking sticks which were quite helpful. We had finished an 8 day live aboard excursion so had been doing some hiking during that time which helped prepare us for Punta Pitt. The views and the wildlife are worth the hike if you can do it.

We'll be staying on San Cristobal island for a few days in mid-November
. What is the best way to do a day trip to Punta Pitt and what is the approximate cost? How do we book this in advance?
Written October 31, 2017
While I am sure you have already been to the Galapagos and returned, I will give an answer for others who may have the same question. You will need to go with a boat operator. We used Sharksky to book and were pleased with their service. I would estimate that the cost is about $100 per person.

Which tour company did you use to go to Punta Pitt? Going in September and any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Who did you use as tour company to go to Punta Pitt? I am planning September and doing day tours no cruise. Any help would be great. Thanks

Hi Joe-
Did you do a cruise around the Galapagos, or did you take a day trip to Punta Pitt from San Cristobal? If you took a day trip from San Cristobal, which tour company did you use and would you recommend them?
Thanks!

Hi, I will be in San Cristobal in late April, 2017 and would like to book a day trip to Punta Pitt. Can you recommend any tour operators to whom i would like to book in advance. Thanks

Can someone please advise me on what operator to contact for naturalist guide trip to Punta Pitt? Thanks!
Written October 14, 2016
If you book a tour to Punta Pitt, naturalist guide is always included. If you going on a cruise Punta Pitt is mostly included on excursion. I don't think you can go by yourself to that area, a naturalist guide is necessary. Any operator in the island they provide you a local guide
