This is a small busy town 2 hours from Bodhgaya. The main attraction is the Nalanda ruins and the Rajgir Shanti Stupa. I found it to be busy and dirty. There are lots of other places to see like the Wildlife park as well. It would feel nicer to visit if it was cleaner.

Worse than the dirt and grime are the people who are offensively aggressive in asking for tips/bribes. As gross as the locals were...nothing was worse than the two cops who came up to my group and blatantly just asked for a bribe/baksheesh.

If I were an Indian, I would be embarrassed by the hot springs. Avoid at all costs.

Visited Rajgir on 5th May, 2012. Although summers may not be advisable to visit the place as it was very hot during the day. We went first to the World peace stupa, which is at the top of Ratnagiri Hill, 2000m above MSL. The ropeway connecting the top was scary, as it was an open one. I havent seen a ropeway anywhere else. But the view was amazing. Both ways it costs only Rs. 40/head. At the top, there is the shanti stupa & a Budhist Temple. From the top, one can view the whole town & the scenery below. The famous spot where Lord Krishna killed Raja Jarasandha is also located nearby. There are chariot marks all over the place & it felt good to be in that place. there is also a dam & lake nearby. But its not advisable to go there in the evening. The dam, they said, closes at 2 pm. We also visited the Sonebhandar, a place near the hill which has a long cave. the story behind the door which couldnt be opened by anyone till date was interesting. The other place nearby worth viisting is sulphur spring. Overall it was a good trip. With the road conditions and safety improving drastically in Bihar, one can surely plan a visit.

Rajgriha, Rajgir, Nalanda-Rajgir was an ancient place in the Ramayana Period (Treta Yuga). Also known as Rajgriha, Vasumati, Barhadrathapura, Kusagrapura, Girivraja. Rajgriha (Rajgir) was the capital of the Mighty Magadha Kingdom for many centuries. Sorrounded by several hills - Vaibhara, Ratna, Saila, Sona, Udaya, Chhatha and Vipula; its a beauty during monsoon and winter season. This place is said to be connected to Vasu, the fourth son of Brahma who founded Girivraja and Brihadratha and The powerful Samrhat Jarasandha of the Mahabharat Period (Dwapar Yuga). Remains of temples and fortification walls, stone walls of new Rajgir, stupas, caves, monasteries, shrines, the Maniar Math, and the Sonbhandar caves are places of immense historical importance. The excavations have revealed antiquities, terracotta, cemetery, Karanda tank, Pippala stone house, and the Saptaparni cave, ancient Jain temple with images of Jain tirthankaras.

As the capital city of Kingdom of Magadh, it oversaw and laid the foundations of mighty Magadhan empire ruled by different dynasties that subsequently dominated the whole South Asia/Indian sub-continent and beyond. It is a an important gem of history as its location exemplifies and provides travelers and historians with an understanding of what it was like to be in Rajgriha thousands of years ago. In addition, this is where Buddha [deliberated, taught, introspected, debated] set up his base for the propagation of his ideas which later went on to be codified as Buddhist teachings. Historically and religiously, this place is equivalent to Jerusalem.

My advice to travelers is to study the ancient Indian history to feel and imbibe the importance about this place. Of course, Rajgir does not offer modern tourists many options to enjoy but does offer space for nature walks and strolling at different places which are associated with the different great rulers of Indian history, Hindu, Buddhist and Jain religious sites. Though in modern times, it is a small town which is depended on tourism economy and action of locals act as nuisance for visitors at times.

This was the 3rd time I was visiting Rajgir and I always stay at Veerayatan spending time with the people who look after the charitable eye hospital. The doll museum is wonderful. There are a lot of attractions to see and you would need to read up earlier as to which one will interest you. Two mountains to climb - on one you have a Jain temple and on the other you have a Buddhist stupa. The hot springs are very dirty and can be avoided. The town has a policy of not allowing visitors vehicles for the local s/s and you need to do it in the tuk-tuk (tonga). The tongawallahs charge a lot and are not clean. All of the attractions lie on the road to the buddhist hill. Since a lot of foreigners come here good food is available for a change.

The place has historic significance. Go for the hike and not the ropeway. Its easy walk along the nearby hills.do carry water along. At the top are shops and a temple with a good view of the Rajgir.A must visit if you visit Nalanda.

Present Bihar and erstwhile state of Patliputra, takes us back to our rich heritage. Not very far from Patna (3 to 4 hours by road),which itself has many an attractions and places of interest, Rajgir offers a lovely view of the surrounding hills when one goes to the top by aerial ropeway, which may be the longest or comparable to the one at Auli(ski fame)in Uttarakhand.
The Stupa(Peace pagoda) here is a magnificent piece of architecture. Its is the place where Buddha gave sermon to his disciples. Mahavir also visited this place as there are approximately 26 Jain temples in this area.
There are number of places nearby to link you with the past, like the jail where King Bimbisara was chained and kept by his own son Ajatshatru. As also the mysterious cave (Swarna Bhandar)supposedly having treasure of gold of King Bimbisara kept there which can only be opened if some one can decipher the script written at its entrance which has MANTRA written .There is a wild life century close by but could not be visited due to paucity of time,
Another hour's drive are the ruins of famous Nalanda university which was at its prime in the 4th and 5th Century AD.Only one tenth of the ruins have been excavated so far. What one wonders is as to how in those times, approximately 10 to 12 thousand students could collectively live and learn at a university with all the logistics involved. The guide gives you an insight in to the functioning there.
Just 3 km from these ruins is a beautiful building which gives you an insight of the visit of Chinese traveller Hieun Tsang, a student and later teacher of Nalanda University.
On the whole an exciting experience to remember for the rest of the life.
Recommended to travel by own car or taxi. Number of hotels /guest houses to suit everyone's budget are available. Not to forget the Tonga ride at Rajgir and a dip in hot springs.

One of very popular tourist destination in Bihar, especially among the Buddhist,Janis and Hindus. The place is said to be surrounded by 7 hills, but i found more than 25 of lush green hills.the peace pagoda made by Japan govt sits at the top of hills, whose way is through most adventurous rope ways.the cliff has a serene and cool atmosphere.Lord Buddha use to be there every day for some 14 yrs.
the city is dotted by many monasteries of japan and china.its Hindu era history dates back to Mahabharata era .there are many excavated sites which are well-preserved showing history as old as 4000 years
some peaks are occupied by jain temples, which can only be seen if you climb some 500 stairs
last but not the least,RAJGIR HOT WATER SPRINGS,said to have medicated properties is a must visit
