If you like a peaceful, quiet campground with good hiking trails and great staff then this is the place to be. The Visitors Center has a great museum, interpretive trails and the park is open year round. With 44 campsites of which 7 are resolvable on Reserve America. It is a small campground and seems to fill up on the... More

Take note, US states--New Mexico has the best state parks we've been in, and Oliver Lee leads the pack. At first I thought it seemed pretty open and barren, but each site has vegetation that provides at least some privacy--this was my husband's favorite simply because of the vegetation: yucca, cacti, sotol, etc. The birding here was very good considering... Take the time to go into the visitors center to learn about the area. Good trails for hiking. They give tours of the old Oliver Lee ranch house on Saturdays. Good camp/RV sites.

The museum was a welcoming escape from the wind on the day we visited. Lots of old west articles on display and items from local history. The garden was still a nice stroll despite the wind. Was interesting to see it from the basin for once.

My family and I needed somewhere to stay with our 35ft rig near Whitesands NP. We found this little gem. Hosts were lovely and helpful and even loaned my daughter a sled for playing at Whitesands. Place was immaculate. Views were stunning. Visitors centre interesting and educational and the walking trails were fun. We only intended in overnighting and ended... More

Embarrassed to say it took me five years to get around to visiting the park. I'd driven by many times on the way to El Paso, but from the highway it didn't look like much. HOWEVER, my hubby and I went there on weekend to check out what was there. My, my what a surprise. Fantastic views, great little museum,... More

I have driven past this park so many times on my way to Ruidoso but never stopped till this weekend. Wow! What a beautiful hike I've been missing. It is a rather long in and out hike that is a little over 5 miles each way. You do need some degree of good conditioning but if you take it slow... More

We chose this park for convenience, not for the park itself. We liked it so much that we extended our stay. It's a great location for exploring the area. It's close to Alamogordo for supplies. The park itself is really pleasant - in the Chihuahuan desert at the base of Dog Canyon. The campsites are well spaced and have great... More

Though it is a bit tough to level out at some campsites, the view is worth the trouble. Absolutely gorgeous area and full hookups are available, W/E/S. No cable or wifi, though we picked up local tv stations. Quiet as can be and parking spots are not close together at all. A really nice get-away!

The park visitor center has a nice collection of artifacts and interpretive displays that tell the history of the area, specifically Dog Canyon. The nature trail winds along the creekbed with shade from cottonwoods - a very pretty area. For the adventurous, there's a hike up to the canyon walls, but it's not for the casual visitor. Nice campground area... More
