I think that expectations need to be set before doing these cruises. I expected more. I recommend expecting canals with lots of water hyacinths, fair amount of litter and pollution, a ton of birds, and simple observation of the locals along the banks. It was good to have quiet and restore energy.

We had an overnight stay on a houseboat in alleppey as part of a tour of Kerala, we were not sure what to expect but it was the highlight of our tour. The boats are gorgeous, be prepared though you will need insect repellant! We had a driver and chef on board and had lunch, dinner and breakfast cooked fresh... More

Raul and his crew welcomed us on board at Purity and provided exemplary service, food and drinks whilst on board our two berth boat including lighting a Hindu multi wick candle at sunset to celebrate the Ramayana festival when we moored for the night. The bird life, cooling breeze and tranquility made for a memorable overnight cruise.

Best enjoyed during winter time after the monsoons are through. There are houseboats (boats with furnished bedrooms, living area and kitchen) run by many operators with varying levels of comfort and safety. The scenery can get a bit repetitive after a day or so.

Don't get lured into staying on an expensive houseboat! They look great from the outside but are quite boring for a whole day and night. The best way to experience this amazing place is to get a local canoeing tour, which takes you through the smaller back-canals, past people doing their laundry and by families who will make you fresh... Trip of the houseboat through the backwaters with Sightseeing to the ricefields, the wild birds and the smal island villages is a must.
