Being a bird watcher and Amateur Photographer I was having a plan to visit the kadalundi Bird Sanctuary for quite some time and finally made it possible on 5-4-2015 as some one had said that December to April is the right season to see the Migratory birds.
I had a mixed feeling of both disappointment and satisfaction. The satisfaction is because there were the birds in large numbers(Please see the photograph taken from a distance of atleast 1 kilometer). The disappointment is that I could not go any where near the birds even by 500 meters.
It is a sand island in the backwaters more than 1 kilometer distance from the land on any side making it difficult to see the birds directly through our eyes. You have to see them only with some powerful Binaculars or high zoom cameras and luckily I had one with 50x zoom. Hence my idea of spending sometime there was totally ruined and disappointed.
My recommendation for bird lovers is as follows: This sanctuary is not for amateurs but for professionals only with high power binoculars and high zoom cameras. There is no facility of any type available nearby. There is no meaning for the welcome boards kept by the department of tourism. I took the picture standing on a road bridge far away in the west. The location is about 20 kms from Kozhikode city.
If you find this information is helpful, pl. say so.

Perfect place for a day tour,,,,went with a lot of apprehension,,,but was recieved by a guide as we approached the spot...the officer in charge warmly welcomed us and have a brief description,,, although a sunny day they gave us hats and umbrellas,,,we were taken in a local boat and the sights excited us,,,we could spot at least 10 types of birds about 5 were exotic,,,saw dishes jumping ,,the mangrove journey was delightful....then a trip in backwaters watching fishing ....could even get live crabs for a good bargain...after a 3 hour ride was back for tasty food...local produce though a bit on spicier side....we were totally impressed and kids sooper happy...not tired at all,,,if you have about 12 pole can share a boat,,,it'll just cost 100 for a person...must visit place P S green land tours is partly government run so remuneration goes to the local panchayat too...please carry ur own water bottles and don't take any plastics as the officials have to remove kilos of plastic waste each month....be an eco friendly traveller...

First, the road leading to the sanctuary is very narrow, secondly one will not get to see any birds ( Oct ) as it is not seasonal time.Checked with the locals and they too shared the same points.
Not worth to waste your valuable time here.

It's a nice place to visit if you want some place which is away from chaos of city, It's joining place of Kadalundi river in to Arabian Sea. Kadalundi bridge is beautiful sunset view point which faces 180° to the sea one side...and opposite side to the bird sanctuary and mangrove settlement. Calm quiet and peaceful, you can hire a boat from sanctuary office for a closer look of the birds. Boat ride in the traditional style is a must do through the sanctuary, Boat Service provides with sea food also, If anyone interested in Traditional Boat Service with Food you can contact Green Island Tourism at Kadalundi Bird Santuary, They provide safe, hygienic and joyful journey through the Kadalundi River, thier Contact Details: 9539338338, 9447192053, 9526902890

I had actually anticipated trip to this place but against all the excitement what I got was a disappointment. Partly because of weather and partly because of poor maintenance and lack of proper information. Despite being late November, I couldn't see any migratory birds and even domicile birds were hard to see besides a few ones. No support or informations for tourists coming to this place.

Nearly half an hours drice from Kozhikode city will take you to kadalundi bird sanctuary. A railway station is also there in Kadalundi and the sanctuary starts from near the railway station. The sanctuary is a mangrove habitat and is a recluse for migratory birds from around the world. The birds flock to kadalundi after the monsoons. But Kadalundi is more beautiful during the monsoons like any other place in Kerala.
