Perhaps not a square in a traditional sense, but a park area around a body of water in central Kozhikode. The man-made tank (chira) exists since the 14th century and is named after the then Zamorin ruler Mana (short for Mahadevan).
The tank is fed by a natural spring and still plays a role in supplying Kozhikode with drinking water. For this reason recreational activities like bathing are not allowed. All around is pleasant green park area.

The Mananchira Square is in the heart of Calicut Town which offers a perfect relaxing atmosphere, we can sit there enjoying the beauty of the pond, chat with our friends, spend time with family etc.. Kids will have a good time playing in the park. The Mananchira Square can be said as a well maintained park with the large man made pond (was built by the ruler of Calicut, Zamorin in 14th century) surrounded by a park with sculptures of prominent writers, ornamental plants, trees, open air theater, musical fountain, lamp posts to illuminate the area etc. I have been to Mananchira Square and spent evenings, the feel it gives is much better than staying inside the hotel room. Entrance is after 2.PM and is allowed free of cost. Properly maintained, this is the best place to spend an evening while in Calicut with family or friends and relax

It is situated in the heart of the city; yet free from the hustle and bustle of the city. Full of greenery, sculptors, and a vast expanse of lawns to sit and relax with your dear ones. A nice spot. You will enjoy your sitting here in the evening. The sad point is that the security alerts you to leave by 8 o' clock in the evening spoiling your joyful mood. You will love to sit here for long hours. I think they must allow at least till 10 pm. Do come here with your family or friends along with a few packets of snacks. It's a wonderful and exciting experience.

If yo happen to visit Calicut Mananchira Square, you will find a new kind of sculpture right near to the entrance area... It is a new concept which is a bowl shaped with a message engraved - "Give if you can and Take if you have to". This is the idea of world renowned sculptor Mr. Jacek Tylicki, who was in town to inaugurate. Installation was done by Calicut based Uday Hue...

Mananchira Square is a park with a huge Pond in the City centre of Kozhikode, one of the major cities, in the Malabar region of Kerala state. The historic maithan, adjacent to Manachira has been converted into an arcadia with trees and plants, an artificial hill, shrubs, sculpture, an open-air theatre, and a musical fountain.
I visited this park on a hot after noon in April( 4-4-2015). In a highly polluted Road traffic city, the park was a relief for me to relax for some time in a green environment. There was water in the big square pond. This can not be called as a great park, but definitely I would put it in a ‘very good’ category considering the city centre location having a big pond with water, a big play ground and some heritage trees which you can see in my photographs.
I understand that It is named after Manadevan Samoothiri, the erstwhile ruler of the Kozhikode Kingdom, known as Mana-vedan Chira (pond) and later transformed to Mana-an-Chira.
