The Rajarani temple is located inside a park. The Park is well maintained but the insides of the temple are not. We could hear bats on a window inside the temple. The ticket counter takes only cards and each transaction takes a lot of time. Hence better to purchase an entrance ticket from the ASI website whose QR scanner is available outside the ticket counter. Wish the insides of the temple were maintained better. It is still a very nice place and would recommend a visit to see the architecture up close.

The Rajarani Temple is supposedly so named not because it references some raja (king) and rani (queen) but because it’s made of a sandstone that was locally known as rajaraniya. The temple was probably built around the 11th century CE, and was dedicated to Shiva, though now there is no longer a deity within the temple and it is a monument under the Archaeological Survey of India.

The temple is situated within a sprawling garden, with extensive lawns and flowering shrubs all around. A wide path of laterite stone leads from the gate to the temple. Like other temples of the Kalinga style of architecture, the Rajarani Temple too has two parts to it: a spire or ‘deul’, and a hall or ‘jagamohan’. The jagamohan here has some carving around its doorway, but is otherwise relatively plain. The deul, however, makes up for it: it is covered with very intricate and beautiful carving, really worth exploring.

Since this is under the aegis of the ASI, it’s a ticketed monument. Entry fees for Indian adults is Rs 25 per person.

An extreamly beaytiful temple in Bhubaneswar. It should be in the bucketlist of all visitors going to Bhubaneswar. With a very marginal amount you can witness the marvelous structure with well maintained garden. As photography is allowed, so go on clicking both inside and outside. The garden is also very beautiful with lots of flowering plants.

11th century Somavamsi temple shows further evolution of Odisha temple architecture with clustered miniature shikaras on the rekha deula and pyramidal jagmohan in front. Carvings on jagmohan entrance are lifelike nagas. Lintel has a depiction of the navagrahas. Inside its quite plain. Sculpture on the outside is evolving to the quality achieved at Konark.

Set in a large, landscaped garden and protected by an armed guard at the entrance.

Th e temple is set like a jewel in a beautiful garden- kudos to Odisha ASI. But no guides despite tickets. So the grounds were primarily used for pre wedding shoots etc. It would be good if ASI can train some guides to cover the key temples in Bhubaneshwar

Raja rani temple is popular for the mythic story of two lovers lost in a dark forest, where a tigers scream was heard and the raja thought rani was killed by the tiger and he killed himself to death, the rani seeing the dead raja killed herself. So the people in the ancient times thought it was the replica of god and goddess and constructed a temple rajarani. This is the history that i came to know from a native of odhissa. Believe it or not!
Yes the temple is beautiful. The sequence works on the temple walls are beautiful. The temple has natural streams inside where you could even get a glimpse of a tortoise and some beautiful fish. It is a peaceful place.

Not many knew of this jewel. But I could not snatch my eyes away from the intricate curvings. This is a must visit spot and a preserved site by GSI.

Bhubaneswar the capital city of Odisha, India, was the ancient capital of the Kalinga Empire and the architectural legacy of the period is its greatest attraction. There are innumerable temples in Bhubaneshwar with exceptionally beautiful carvings built mostly between 8th to 12th century. The beautifully maintained Rajarani Temple is one of the attractions built in the period 11th -12th century CE. It is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. The curious name Rajarani (King-Queen) emanates from the fact that two different colours of sandstone were used to build this temple.
It was probably built as a Shiva temple, but no deity is worshipped there now. Surrounded by lush green lawns and gardens and bereft of the thronging crowds of worshippers, this temple provides the perfect atmosphere for admiring the exquisite sculptures for which the temples of Bhubaneshwar are famous. There are various sculptures in the walls around the temple and the dome (vimana) depicting scenes of marriage of Shiva, Nataraja, Parvati, and beautiful women depicted in various roles and moods. According to historians, the erotic sculptures on its walls were the inspiration of later temples in Central India like the Khajuraho.
After observing the temple and its atmosphere, I felt it was probably a place of leisure for Kings and Queens. Maybe that resonates in the temple's name too. It continues to be a serene place for the locals and tourists to spend few hours enjoying the temple’s sylvan surroundings.

This is an amazing place of Bhubaneswar. It is really neat n clean historical monument
.Many programmes, events and cultural activities have been organised at this place.
Legends like Kavita krishnamurty, l.subramanium,Rajan mishr and Saajan mishr, and many more have given their live performances at this place. One old historical temple of 1200 bc is also there, which is an excellent monument of golden days.It provides some different cosmic feelings while on meditation.
Maintenance of park is very good.Entry fee of Rs.5/- is fixed for Indian Tourists. The temple is situated within heart of Bhubanesar city. Odisha Tourism is also appreciable to maintain the historical park.

Worth seeing,

Good Wishes
