This museum contains the four headed Ashoka lion which fell of the Ashoka pillar which is in the Sarnath ruins. It also has a beautiful Buddha statue which shows the first sermon by the Buddha at Sarnath. There are several interesting artefacts in this museum.

This museum is controlled and managed by the Archaeological Survey of India and houses the artifacts( 2000-3000 years old) excavated from the Sarnath site in the vicinity. This is a very clean and well maintained museum with an entry fee of Rs.5/-. Photography is prohibited inside. Apart from other excavations it also houses the upper portion of the Ashokan Pillar.
This is a must see attraction in Sarnath.

This museum makes us wonder ,at the same time sad,for all the past things that happened!
This is the oldest site museum in India, completed in 1910,designed as half monastery, with five galleries. It houses more than 6,500 sculptures and artefacts, from mauryan, kushan and Gupta periods!
These exhibits( mostly of stone),tell us the history of Buddhism and our nation ,of 1500 years ,spanning from 3rd century BC to 12th century CE.
We went there to see the Lion capital of Ashoka, which is our national emblem and we are happy to get more than what we expected!
It is in the main Hall, called as Shakyasimha gallery.
We felt it is worth the visit and suggest that teenager s must visit this!
There is a beautiful sculpture of Buddha of fifth century. He sits cross legged ,in deep meditation and a halo around his head!
Padmapani...life size, standing Bodhisattva is impressive with a lotus in his hand.
Nilakantha Lokesvara, with a cup of poison, Maitreya, preaching Buddha and many more images of Buddha in different attitudes, pot bellied seated Yaksha figure are famous.
There are many idols of Hindu deities , which are used for study not for worshipping and many figures of birds and animals and carvings.
There is a colossal edifice of Andhakasura vadha which is not seen elsewhere!
Museum timings are 10 am to 4.30 pm.
After tiring journey and hot sun, one will feel relaxation ,inside the museum!
Then one can visit various Buddhist temples. Outside stupa and ruins one should see either morning before 10 or evening after 5 pm to avoid hot sun!

Very well-kept museum with amazing local exhibits, including the original beautiful Ashokan chakra and lion capital that are now symbols of the country; the lion capital is in amazing condition and the finish and craftmanship pay testimony to the talent and skill of the people of the time - well worth a visit

The best part about this museum is that it houses the national symbol of India.
I never thought that our national symbol is still so shining and intact - I figured it was more like a broken mass and unkempt - and I was so wrong. Since photos are not allowed inside the museum, so I cant share the picture - but this museum is worth a visit - in fact my 7 year old son was as engrossed as I was in seeing the artifacts and various items used by the earlier civilizations. I guess one should devote a minimum of 2-3 hours for this museum - its worth every second.
