Went there at night (apparently this is 24 hours?)...fresh food, vegetables and even meat are displayed openly for people to buy.

Hardly any tourists but I feel it is a good visit if you want to see how locals go about with their marketing.

Pretty interesting food section as well - crepes, warm steamed baos, drinks stall are there - can try like a local!

It was part of a tour, but really could have skipped. First of all, apparently the market is only open in morning, so while there were a couple stall open to show us, not much to see. Also, not nearly as good as other open air markets we’ve seen elsewhere.

The Badung Traditional Market is a centre of Denpasar located on Gajah Mada Street. This traditional market is apposite a village temple that is one of three biggest temples in Denpasar. This Badung market is located in 2 large building separated by a small river. The Badung market is a must see, with spices in the basement of one building will make your eyes water and the fresh herbs will stimulate your nostrils it’s an amazing sight.
The market is full of everything from art work, to fruit and vegetable as well as handy craft and jewellery. Prices are not bad as long as you can haggle and be prepared to walk away to get the best deals. The walkways and corridors are very narrow and tight so if you are at all afraid tight dark spaces this may not be for you.

The locals will approach you at the entry and offer to be “your guide” they will follow you around the market telling the stall holders what you are looking at and expect payment for their service, even if you say no.

The market it known for pick pockets so keep an eye on your possessions, cash and cameras at all times.

Well worth a visit, just off the market is the street full of jewellers that sell quality gold jewellery, these items are sold by weight and well worth a visit if you are interested in 18 to 24 carat gold jewellery.

An authentic Asian market, smelly, cramped, full of all sorts of things and very in your face. BUT an awesome experience, that you should have at least once. Though not for the faint hearted. You'll pick up a guide but you just have to say No (repeatedly) if you don't want one. If you do actually want to shop here, then a guide is very useful. Just tell them what you are after and they'll save you heaps of time. If you are cooking in Bali then the food and spices are worth buying. Also the ground floor had some great material shops (plus some of the neighbouring streets). Warning it can be rather hot in there, as its wall to wall full of ...everything! Funnily, my 8 year olds loved it.

Fruits here are very cheap and the fruit sellers do not try to rip you off though some locals may stick to you like flies in order to earn some money from you. To deal with such people, just keep saying no.

For the people from non-Asian countries, do try the Salak or Snake skin fruit. There are several species of this fruit and My driver recommended the Gula Pasir which is supposed to be very sweet. Some other species are sweet sour so it depends on your personal preferences.

We got very sweet mangoes at 1 per kg and 0.5kg of Salak at 10k rupiah.
The market is an open air wet market and do expect it to be dirty but it is really an eye-opener. There are people (adult and children) carrying large baskets on their heads. These folks earn a living by being human shopping carts i.e. they walk with you to help you carry your purchases.

Avoid the areas near theback where the drains are as the stench is unbearable.

Take a look at the temple constructed in the middle of the river. Though it isn't impressive, it looks quite special being in the centre of the river.

There are some local foods which you may want to try out but do note that the level of hygiene differs from that of a developed country. Try it at your own risk.

Whoever has visited a market in SE Asia will find this place of no interest whatsover. Beside that, unless you show up in the early morning, most of the food stands will already have closed.
If you stii want to pay this market a visit, make sure to arrange a back-home taxi ride in advance, as this place is totally depleted of taxis, and you may find yourself stranded there for hours

If you don't look like a local you won't have a good experience. The markets themselves are incredibly crowded, narrow and hot and stuffy.
This is made worse by the local women who will follow you from outside and act as your defacto tour guide. I would not recommend this as even though we made it clear to the ladies following us that we would not be renumerating them for their unwanted services they still persisted.
Inside you may get a good bargain, but the experience is not worth the savings. We were offered 3.5 million rupiah for 4 pairs of raylon pants. Previous experience dictated that a fair price was 60-10,000 per piece. I was able to get four for 350,000 (which is on the upper end of the price range especially considering that I was buying four) with so much drama that the negotiations had gone beyond friendly haggling/bartering to outright demands and rudeness. In the end I just handed over the cash and made a beeline for the door.
Tourists areas while more expensive have proven to be a more enjoyable experience on this trip for shopping.

Took our kids ( aged 11,13& 14) here to see what real local markets are like and for them to understand how this is still a developing country ... yep they hated it and it was a culture shock but it's something they will never learn in a classroom and they will never forget . My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience once we got our bearings . Stick to the left side if you don't want to see the meat and yukky stuff . Lots of amazing bargains in housewares, & jewellery on left side . No Kuta mark up here !
