My title is not about the Pasar. The Pasar itself is nice for a stroll. Just check it out.
I was looking for a platform to inform you on the Ubud taxi services. They are very hostile towards Uber, Grab and Go-Car taxis. They start fights with them and there are signs everywhere that they are not welcome here. And why... because they want to keep the prices high!
They charge 300k to Ubud while it will be between 130k and 150k if you take Uber, Grab or Go-Car! This is because these services calculate with the Normal Tarif based on how expensive everything is in the country.

Each time we visit Ubud, we love to spend some time at the market. It can be chaotic, noisy and hot, but do know they have different sections for purchasing what you need.
We tend to go into the bowels and lowest floors for coffee beans, coffee powder and spices such as pepper seeds, coriander, cumin and vanilla pods. We tend not to haggle as prices are already low. For instance, on the latest trip, we picked up packs of Bali pepper seeds at 20000 rupiah, as well Bali coffee for 30000 rupiah.
The ground floor has clothes like batiks, souvenirs and fruits, as well as massage oils. Do take the time to walk-around the surrounding lanes, especially where there are mini art studios dotted about.

You're in Bali... you are on holidays... you want to buy some souvenirs to take home in between trips to the monkey forest and the beach...
There are places to shop all over the island. I've learnt by now that you can pretty much buy the same stuff everywhere and how much you pay depends on the seller, you, if you can haggle etc.
When I first arrived in 1988 I thought the market was paradise but haggled ferociously - I was on a backpackers budget. I've definitely grown jaded since then... but every time I'm in Ubud, I always visit the market and I always buy something: pearl shells or silk/cotton sarongs as gifts. If you're polite and buy in quantity you generally get a pretty good deal.. I'm sure someone else will always be cheaper.. but do you really need that $5 more than they do?
I have never had any issues with touts or bag snatchers but exercise the same level of caution as you would at home.

At the center of Ubud town, the renovated Pasar Ubud Market is a traditional local market plus a tourist marketplace. Smaller than Sukawati Market in Gianyar, but selectively has better quality stuff. Better arts, wooden carvings, clothings, kites, masks, precious gems, real vanilla beans, real saffron and dried spices. The key is to haggle, haggle, and haggle.
Vividly colorful paper kites are hanging on a white wall with torn plasters. I climbed the stairs to the main building, ignorantly passing a metal plate commemorating the ceremony of the opening of the place by the government long time ago. Walking through tiny corridors, hot and damp air, passing clothes sellers who sells all kinds of t-shirts with international logos, sarong bali, Balinese pants, yoga loose pants . I notice that Barong shirts are no longer popular. Downpouring rain outside the building. I waited as my co-traveler bought a pair of plastic flip flop. My wandering mind led me to walk inside a groceries store, shelves full of colorful snacks and candies are at display. A sprinkle of water on my head, I closed my eyes instantly. The shopkeeper was doing a daily ritual of sprinkling water with flower around his shop to purify the place. Looking to the outside, there was a long stair to the lower ground. The flip flop bargain was agreed, the transaction was consummated. We continued to walk through the labyrinth to find a way to the stairs. There was a temple at the bottom end of the stair, apparently for the goddess who protect the market. Walking down the stairs, a lady tried to sell wooden carvings in the shape of male member in all color, length and girth. I remember that this trend was started decades ago.
The lower ground is for trading produce. Local veggies, imported fruits, flowers and flies are everywhere. Find a Dulang Prada shop but was closed. A lady shopkeeper next door told us that the seller didn’t come today, she might come tomorrow but after noon as she lives far away in the village. We return to the first floor, and bought Balinese sarong for tomorrow's trip to the temples. The temples would require tourists to wear sarong on top of pants before entering the holy place, so we must cover ourselves with this Balinese piece of clothes.
It was still raining, we walked under our umbrellas back to Sandat street to our hotel at Jiwa Guest House.

Nice market. Can get some souvenirs there and remember to bargain!! Normally you can deal at half or 1/3 of the starting price.

The Pasar Ubud is really two markets in one. There is a wet market for fresh foods and an art market. I have been to the Pasar Ubud many times during our trips to Bali. One of the first times was with Janet DeNeefe of the Casa Luna Cooking school. We explored the wet market's many of the stalls containing pungent & aromatic spices, herbs, familiar & unique vegetables, exotic fragrant fruit, fish, meat, poultry, colorful flowers, and unusual items such as rice field eels, frogs, bee larva & much more. I go back to this market every trip to refresh my supply of Balinese spices & salt. Yes, salt! Bali has the most tasty salt that I ever eaten. Go to the wet market very early. Balinese shoppers are there at the crack of dawn. The wet market is pretty well finished by 10:00 AM.
The art market contains all the local art made in the villages surrounding Ubud. Some of the item you can expect to see intricately-patterned batiks, wood carvings, hand woven baskets, green celadon pottery, handwoven table runners, napkins, home decor items, colorful hand-painted kites, leather-work, an endless variety of sarongs, religious statues such as Buddha, paintings, jewelry, beautifully beaded purses, and much more. Go to this market early before the heat & the tourist crowds arrive. Sellers are always keen to get that first morning sale. They believe the first sale gives them good sales for the rest of the day. Bargain hard. But, smile & be kind.:)

amazing experience with payuk bali cooking class. wonderful morning see daily activity of balinese people at the ubud market . before cooking class we go to see and learning about spices and vegetable that is used for cooking ,than guide to rice field to see Bali rice ,until at home we learning making balinese offering .making coconut oil. start to cooking food. The chef very friendly and really funny people .they give us a very good time . also the people who help in the kitchen are very helpfull and very friendly we had real good time , enjoyed the wonderful view , laughed and cooked if you like cooking or you want to taste the real Balinese cooking .Participate this course thanks you for the wonderful day

We have visit this morning around 5:30am to Ubud market by motorcycle. This market open at 04am till 07am in the morning; they selling fresh local (salak gula pasir, oranges) and import fruits, traditional foods (small cakes, crackers, rice, tipat). After 07 am this market change to art market (clothes, accessories).

Get up and go early in the morning at latest 6am to buy exotic fruits for local prices. Much more sellers as during the day. Excellent experience! Bargain, bargain and bargain!
If you want to buy some sarongs or some souvenirs and other stuff like this, don't be lazy and go upstairs. The sellers here will be really happy for any visitor! And you will be able to get good price.

The owner of the homestay where I stayed for 3 days invited me to go with her one morning. There were many vendors selling fresh fruits, vegetables, sweets, prepared or ready-to-eat Balinese breakfast, stuffs needed to prepare temple offerings, etc at this market. Prices of items sold are very cheap! Most buyers appeared to be locals.
Later the same day, I went to the same market. Noted that vendors were different, items sold are mostly artisans and craft types. Customers are generally tourists!
