The Hindu temple was built or completed in 1266 AD. I like the architecture of the structures on the temple grounds. This used to be the major Balinese temple during the later part of the 13th and most of the 14th century.

This is a small simple local temple also known as the Moon Temple. The only reason to visit here is the 1,800 year old copper temple drum known as the Moon of Pejang.. Legend has it that this was a wheel on a chariot of the gods, used to pull the moon across the heavens. It broke off and fell to earth. Legend aside, it has been confirmed as a product of the Bronze Age and is therefore unique. Just for the historical significance it’s worth a quick visit. This is not a special destination in itself, but could be combined with your tour in the area. Plan for around 20 minutes. Sarongs are provided, no admission charge but donations are appreciated. Looked like there was a bit of shopping and some food available across the street.

We were taken here as part of a tour around the area from Ubud. We went to a number of temples and this was the least interesting. It is on the list as it has a very old bronze drum, representing the moon. In itself as something to look at it is not remarkable even if it is remarkable in its age.

There was no one else there at all when we visited apart from the man on the gate. The other parts of the temple was unremarkable. At this temple we had to put a material belt around us, provided at the gate, rather than a sarong.

If you are on your way past anyway worth 10 minutes but otherwise I would suggest not, unless you have a particular interest in historical artefacts.

Our driver recommended this to us as a beautiful place to visit and we are so glad he did. The temple is well maintained and a pleasure to explore. It will give you some insight into Balinese traditions and culture and if photos are your thing expect to get some great images. Expect to give a small donation for your group as is usual at religious sites in Bali. The other good thing was that you wont get mobbed by street hawkers here but food and drink are available at the car park

This place is highly recommended in most of the tourist guides of Bali.
But it is definitely not worth to travel there.

Located at a main road full of traffic, there is this temple gate, which looks quite interesting and exciting but behind the gate there is nothing to see ...

Everything is broken and it looks totally lost. Looks like an old ruin. Thats it.
This temple makes me feel that nobody uses it.

One of the oldest megalithic remain of prehistoric Bali is kept in the temple. The famous moon of Pejeng is actually a bronze drum dated from 300 BC, the biggest have ever found of its kind in Indonesia. Have a look at it and the old statues dated from XI century kept in the sanctuaries inside of the temple.

Long years ago during a trip when we visited several temples, I have been here already. It isn’t a place that you wish to see twice, but I wanted to show to my partner this very special drum.
The Moon of Pejeng is more than 2000 years old, and nearly 2 m high, the largest single-cast bronze kettle drum in the world- but you probably read it already several times. When I tried to find the exact meaning of kettle drum, the description was confusing to me, since I couldn’t imagine the Moon of Pejeng as a musical instrument, but in the end, it's not important. What is important is that this Indonesian island more than two thousand years ago had such advanced technology to be able to make such a whatever instrument.
The scenery is nothing special, for me, it was a bit like the Dead Sea Scrolls. To appreciate them, you should know the story behind them.
Since Pejeng near Ubud, if you have a free 1-2 hours worth a visit Pura Penataran Sasih temple.

Pura Penataran Sasih is a Balinese Hindu temple in Pejeng village, Bali in the district of Gianyar. Founded in 1266 AD, it used to be the state temple of the Pejeng Kingdom. In the inner courtyard, there is the huge bronze drum known as the Fallen Moon of Pejeng. The temple has a typical split-gate entrance and hosts Hindu statures that date back to the 10th to 12th century. Sarongs are available at the entrance. Fees are IDR 20,000 per person.
