About
Interact with long-tailed macaques in their natural habitat in the peaceful ambience of Bali’s lush forests. The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary is home to over 1,200 monkeys. As you walk alongside them, you can also check out all the elaborate temples in the area. While guides are always on watch, keep an eye on your belongings and avoid bringing both food and water bottles along. The sanctuary is open daily and an entrance fee is required. You might want to combine your visit to the sanctuary with other attractions in Ubud, including the rice terraces and ancient landmarks. – Tripadvisor

    MUST visit when in Ubud!🐵
Great place to see lots of Monkeys!🙈🙉🙊 Loved the statues and carvings, forest itself and the Temple. It can be very busy though...but the place is big enough to find quieter corner. Highly recommended when staying in Bali💯

    Animal lover? You're in heaven.
You must visit the monkey sanctuary, it's the most voted place to go!! Make sure you LOOK UP in the central roofed area for something unexpected...! Ensure you respect the monekys if they are on a path, walk in the mud/on the grass if you have o, you are in their home not them in yours! Enjoy, take lots of pictures and try to make sure you get to the water areas (follow the edge around clockwise/left, after 15 mins you'll see where they all play!!). Sit on a swing fr monkeys to come nearer (I think they get fed here so the association is positive!)

What a wonderful example of sustainability. I would love to see zoos shift to this cage free model where animals have lots of space to roam and play in their natural environment. I ended up going twice and spent 5 hours the second time watching the monkeys. It's a total Jane Goodall experience for observation.

    Cheeky monkeys!
We had the most fun here today exploring this jungle like temple place with several different monkey families living freely. The views were beautiful and the baby monkeys were a particular highlight! You can buy bananas if you would like the typical tourist pic of the monkey on your shoulder, they are not shy, and definitely not forced to do anything they don't want to do! These little guys are in charge and if they want every banana you have, you better give it to them! We had a fantastic time with them when they jumped on our shoulders, they're actually pretty gentle with soft hands and feet and obviously very agile. DO NOT PET THEM - they're wild animals after all and they will probably bite you. Let them do what they want and never withold the food from them, once they see you have something and want it from you, it's a done deal haha just give in. We had no problems because we let them do what they wanted and didn't interfere with their natural behavior.

    Great monkey experience.
The monkey forest is a great place to get up and personal with monkeys first hand. The rumours that these animals are aggressive are true but only in some cases where you invade their personal space. The mothers are extremely protective over their children, don't dare attempting to touch the babies even if you assume they are not supervised by the mother, because they usually are. The advice upon arrival is, "don't look at the monkey in the eyes", "don't touch the monkey", "don't wear anything shiny - jewellery etc", and most important of all, "do not bring food or drink". If you feed one expect to feed the pack, they get very jealous and thus have means to attack. There are staff (wearing green) every 5 metres and you can be assured safety on your visit. There are staff to even help you take a selfie with the monkeys. You'd enjoy your visit and it's not as scary as it is rumoured about.

    Great time with kids
When we came here it waa raining, and the staff at the ticketing told us that the monkeys would probably be hiding due to the rain. But we were already there so we still got in and suprise! The monkeys were everywhere, playing with the rain, found a cute whole family of monkeys hugging each other during the rain.. the kids were so happy. Just be aware of the rules and warnings. Recommended!

    Wonderful Monkey Forest
The Sacred Monkey Forest is a wonderful experience with beautiful grounds, and monkeys everywhere. And it's so well spread out that even with thousands of other tourists it still never feels crowded. A great spot for people of all ages, with the trees and surrounds every bit as good an attraction as the monkeys. Most tours will take you here, but it's an easy walk, or drive from most places in Ubud. You can pay extra to feed the monkeys 0r pose with them, or just pay the entry and wander around at will.

Beautiful Forested Trails with Monkeys Roaming Freely
Traveling with a family of four with college kids Decided to take a day trip to Ubud from Seminyak. We booked one of the many all day private tours offered from Seminyak area. As part of the tour we stopped at the Sacred Monkey Forest. Mandala Suci Wenara Wana, or well known as Ubud Monkey Forest, is the sanctuary and natural habitat of the Balinese long-tailed macaque. It is located at Padangtegal Ubud, Bali. About 1260 monkeys live in this sanctuary. The Monkey Forest lies within the village of Padangtegal, which owns it. The village's residents view the Monkey Forest as an important spiritual, economic, educational, and conservation center for the village. I like the option of paying our own entrance fee (which cost $80,000 IDR/$5 USD) giving us the option of what we wanted to do at the place. I suppose the main thing that attracts tourists to come is to interact with the monkeys. However, I had more fun watching the terrified reactions of the tourist reacting to the monkeys. The Ubud monkey forest is a bit different from a zoo, because the monkeys are free to come and go as they please. The monkeys have lost their fear of humans. Generally, they will not approach humans who they believe are not offering food, but they invariably approach human visitors in groups and grab any bags containing food that the humans have. They may also grab plastic bottles and bags not containing food, as well as reach into visitors' bags and trouser pockets in search of food, and will climb onto visitors to reach food being held in a visitor's hand, even if the food is held above a visitor's head. The visitor will notice the interesting phenomenon of numerous obese monkeys, a testament to the almost unbounded food supply the huge number of tourists entering the forest provide. Since I wasn't that interested in the monkeys they left me alone. I myself enjoyed the park grounds itself. The Monkey Forest Ubud has 186 species of plants and trees in 12,5 hectares of forest. The Monkey Forest Ubud has 3 temples, namely Dalem Agung Padangtegal Temple, Holy Spring Temple and Prajapati Temple. I enjoyed just walking the heavily forested trails along a deep ravine and rocky stream which runs through the park grounds. Trails allow visitors access to many parts of the park, including the ravine and stream.

Good fun. definitely do the monkey selfie.
Definitely worth doing. You can pay 50,000(aud) to get a 'monkey selfie'. This is the highlight the workers will get the monkeys to climb all over you. We paid twice. Don't stop at the first guy doing the selfies there are more people further in who aren't as busy and will spend more time with each person.

    An Unforgettable Selfie
We were skeptical to visit this place as we have been told that monkeys are naughty & they might snatch our staff. But we have found they are just the opposite. We enjoyed our trip thoroughly & took the selfie of the year. Its recommended not to feed or touch the monkeys & do not tease them in any case.

Yep this place is pretty cool, especially if you have children. The sanctuary is under natural tree cover so I imagine it’s relatively cool through the day. It’s a pretty good opportunity to observe these monkeys in their (somewhat) natural surrounds. I personally didn’t think tourists having their photos taken with monkeys in their laps etc. is a great idea and should be permitted but that’s my opinion only. This place does get very busy and feels a bit touristy for my liking but it’s well maintained and well organised for the volume of tourists they attract. Good for families but I wouldn’t go out of my way to visit here

I have been to all kinds of nature parks, including Night Jungle etc in Singapore. Never have we experienced such a fabulous environment for animals as this forest, had to be over 1000 monkeys of all ages, in a huge ungated free roaming environment, with streams , waterfalls, ample guest facilities , benches, feeding stations, and forest environment. Spent 3 hours there, to see monkeys. Who would have thought to do that. Did it on our own, without a tour company, just walked there from the fabulous NUR Guest house, about 40 minutes away, or could have taxied, just to avoid being offered taxis 300 times.just go there
.This review is from 2020 buT never got submitted and was sitting here as a draft

it was alright, pretty busy - monkeys are actually a little scary seeing as you should avoid eye contact and they hospitalised a 10 year old the day before we came, so we were slightly nervous. essentially considering most tourists are overly comfortable with getting close and taking selfies with the monkeys. overall cool if you’d like to see the funny monkeys, definitely a very touristy spot.

Out of all the things to do in Bali, I had looked forward to the Monkey Forest the most. While it was a cool experience, it was shared with hordes of other tourists who kind of ruin the experience. You do get up close and personal with the monkeys, but you can do that at several other spots for cheaper. The park has some spots of interesting views, but overall was not mega impressive.

This was a fun family experience for us. The monkeys didn't touch us, but we did see some monkeys on people's bags so definitely don't carry food or valuables into the place. It doesn't take long to see the whole area. I think we spent no more than 2 hours here.

Just a note - you need a physical card if you want to pay by card. I tried paying with my phone and they didn't allow it. Luckily I had a card on me. Otherwise cash I guess.

Aggressive monkeys - BEWARE! They bite !
I was sitting down & a monkey came & sat next to me then sank his sharp teeth into my arm. They have an I site Medical Clinic & treat many bites there everyday.
Several rabies shots, tetanus shot, antibiotics & several hospital visits later….
I would not recommend anyone to go there, especially with children.

So funny watching all the monkeys. Some interact with people. Some don't. They are monkeys though so do listen to the recommendation about not taking personal belongings and sunglasses and food etc in. The may well steal them. You can stash your stuff at reception for free.

Several families of Balinese Macaques in this forest in the centre of Ubud. Spent a couple of hours walking the various paths and observing the monkeys. They are mischievous so watch your belongings and they do like their well known introduction ritual to each other. Thoroughly enjoyed my time in the forest.
