The New York State Capitol has served as the seat of government for New York since the 1880's. Over 125 years old, the building is a marvel of late 19th-century architectural grandeur. Built by hand of solid masonry, it took 5 architects and 32 years to complete. Over the years meticulous restoration has been done to maintain and protect the Capitol for future generations of New Yorkers.

We were informed of the free guided tour by the Visitor Centre and just managed to arrive in time to join. About an hour and well worth the time to see the Senate and Assembly Chambers and the very impressive staircases etc.

This is an impressive building. Our tour guide gave us to understand that one of the key objectives of the interior and exterior design had been to impress all comers with the great wealth implied in every aspect. However, the interior can feel cavernous, in...More

Our tour guide was knowledgeable and enthusiastic, so he told us a lot of interesting details about the building. It is very fancy and ornate with many different building materials and quite different from other capitols which are modeled after the U.S. Capitol. The plaza...More
