Fort with a view

Just walk the ramparts and enjoy the stunning views, or walk the streets and enjoy an ice cold soda and a barista style coffee. A wonderful place to spend a half day walking!!

Well worth a visit to the fort. The views over the sea are fabulous. No charge to walk around although there are no signs giving information so look up on Google before visiting.

The fort is impressive in its scale, compared to many other forts I've been to in coastal cities around the world. It's higher and bigger in scale and seems stronger. A local tuk-tuk driver told us that it withstood some initial waves of the 2004 Tsunami and that it prevented some parts of the city from being swept away as... More

We spent a couple of hours just enjoying walking about and admiring the buildings. Plenty of places to eat and drink. Take note to avoid the place near to the clock tower where you are likely to be subjected to street "entertainers" pushing their snake and monkey act.

Old Galle is probably the most highly touristed place in Sri Lanka, and this is reflected in its prices, but it's a great place to stroll about, especially in the early evening when all the daytrippers have left. Plenty of attractive old colonial buildings, including a couple of decent churches, and the jaunt around the ramparts at sunset is very... More

We wandered about, went to some good go temporary though over priced art galleries and boutique type shops. Some great cheap eateries and interesting museums of artefacts. Enjoyed the Buddhist temple with reclining Buddha and good shopping. Also a great ice cream parlour!!

We had a guided tour, which was fine, though the guide did not really understand how the firtifications worked and rather thought tgat anyting with a barred gate was a prison. Nice lady, though. I would reccommend reading up on the fortifications, the Portuguese fortalezza and the subsequent Dutch works as they really are quite well oreserved. Inside the town... More

We spent a number of days at a hotel inside the Old Fort and got a good feel for the place. Very busy with tourists especially at the ramparts. Often there are thousands of school children on a day trip disgorged from local buses that move over the walls like a colony of ants. Everything inside the fort is set... More
