Hard Hiking, Hilarious Memories (now that it is over)

Very difficult hike. Worth the adventure. Head lamps, duct taped pants to boots (or tight gaiters), food & tons of water, walking sticks, and hats are a MUST. Absolutely make... read more

Very difficult hike. Worth the adventure. Head lamps, duct taped pants to boots (or tight gaiters), food & tons of water, walking sticks, and hats are a MUST. Absolutely make sure that the guide goes at the pace you feel comfortable with. Stay at Michael Mantheakis Safari Tented Lodge for the best views of the volcano, the best service, the... More

We did the hike to the top of Ol Doinyo Lengai. We were three friends hiking with two guides. We started at midnight and reached the summit before sunrise. We are pretty fit and sporty so we had to wait around one hour before reaching the top as we were there too early. It is hard hike as it is... More

I hiked the Ol Doinyo Lengai Volcano as part of the Glasgow University Tanzania Expedition. The hike was gruelling to say the least - it took us 19 hours to reach the bus again once setting off. However, it was worth it for the immense views from the top, the fact we witnessed a small eruption at the top, and... More

We were not properly informed nor prepared for the climb up mount Oldionyo Lengai. From safety equipment and climbing gears, to preparedness of our mental and physical fitness. Our tour operator did a bad job advising us about the climb. There were only 2 local massai guides assigned to 10 of us. The climb towards the top was too dangerous... More

We stayed in the tented lodge, which was a nice experience; the tents were very comfortable and with a good ecological approach. The swim in the natural pools and the sucking fish around the body was something unique. Further we had an early morning walk to the lake and the thousands of lesser flamingoes. We finished our with a fantastic... More

If some someone is planning to trek up Mt Oldonyo Lengain, unless they are fit/prepared, they need at least two days. In addition, they need to understand they are hiking up a steep grade with volcanic soils that give way – not easy; I know from experience elsewhere. Of the six people that tried while we were there, only one... More

I've just returned from a multi-day safari with Steve and Beno and it was a fantastic experience! They were very flexible in the schedule, and worked hard to keep prices under control. I will certainly recommend them to freinds wanting to go on safari. Thank you!!

We started our climbing at midnight and luckily me and the guide were the only people doing the mountain that night. Lets be honest, after our 3 days trekking through Maasai Land the climb was really tough for me. We took a total of 9 hours to do the mountain. 6 hours to climb up and 3 to come down... More

Two of my friends and I started hiking up Ol Doinyo Lengai around 11:40 pm. There were a lot of loose rocks which make the ascent tricky. Unfortunately, around 6:30 am, my friends weren't able to hike any higher. I was able to hike to the top around 7:00 am and had just missed the sunrise. The descent was time... More

We climbed Ol Doinyo Lengai in June 2015 as part of a University of Glasgow geological expedition to the area. There was fifteen of us from Glasgow, plus Tanzanian students and staff climbing the volcano, so we set out early (approx. 10.00pm) with head torches to give ourselves plenty of time. The climb is good on the way up, as... More
