Thawan Duchanee (September 27, 1939 - September 3, 2014) was a Thai contemporary painter, architect and sculptor with an international reputation. In 2001, this notable artist was given the price by the Office of the National Culture Commission of Thailand as the National Thai Artist in Fine art and Visual art. Thawan is not only famous for his paintings but also architecture. His architectural masterpiece is Black House. It was the residence for Thawan for the rest of his life. In Thai, 'baan' means home or house and 'dam' means black. The Black House isn't just one structure, but a collection of around 40 buildings of varying shapes and sizes dotted around a peaceful garden. Created by Thailand national artist Thawan Duchanee, the grounds include nearly 40 small black houses made of wood, glass, concrete, bricks, or terracotta in various unique styles and design scattered around the temple area. The cluster of houses accommodates Thawan's collections of paintings, sculptures, animal bones, skins, horns, and silver and gold items from around the world. Several of the houses exhibit Balinese and Burmese architecture and art dating back to the Ayutthaya Period. The artist uses bones as a source of inspiration to paint. It is definitely not a place for animal lovers. There are also various kinds of baskets and drums from many regions and countries on display at Baandam. Not all exhibits are open to public.

The message overall moral is clear: people are wicked. Or it would be most like the supposed artist is wicked / Dark / and evil. This was the worst Exposure of inner demons along with actual Exposure of the darkness of the artist if you could even call it art. Do Not waste your time or money for this Baan... More

This is a definite see for the art lover. This is one artists collection of bones, carvings, paintings etc over several acres. Very interesting to see the whole vision.

Last time I visited this museum it was in the week early morning and much better. I could enjoy the large collection of sometimes weird objects without so many visitors all seeming to stand in large groups so noone else could see the architecture. or exchibits. The wood is amazing and there are many outbuildings to see. On the plus... More

Wow !! We only had a short time to see this intriguing place. Its really a very powerful place and is exudes a very creative energy. Its bold and imaginative. I'm sure it gets crowded so pick a slow time and give yourself a few hours to take it all in.

Easy to do in about an hour or so. Twenty minutes from CR by Tuk Tuk. Lots of unique and creepy displays of animal skins, skulls and artwork.

Wow what a different place to go. The art was different but interesting, the artist clearly had/has a vivid and broad imagination. The grounds are very nice and the buildings quite beautiful. It certainly is a place to visit.

This was an artist's home and it consists of more than one black house, rather a beautiful small village of houses that the artist used, some housing his collections including thousands of animal remains, an elephant skeleton, and snake skin table runner. Very tastefully designed and decorated. I prefer it to the White Temple although both are worth a visit... More

An extraordinary museum. Filled with owner's private collection. As usual, filled with tourist from all around the world. Reached at the time when black house about to open after lunch time but we noticed more than 100 of people waiting to visit the black house at once, we decided to took a afternoon tea break at the small little cafe...
