The river Kawi runs through this region and you’ll have lots of opportunity to see it. In fact your hotel may be right on the river! Look for one that is.

This bridge is a part of Kanchanaburi history. Worth a visit to learn some history of Thailand and appreciate human life.

The area around the River Kwai Bridge in but one of the main attractions, with it's river views, souvenir shops and restaurants. We had a "River Pontoon Cruise" with food, drink and karaoke, wonderful! Just great!

The short answer is yes you can go without a guide. The railway bridge itself is free to go to and there are a lot of stalls in the area for you to see and get some tourist items. The train ride itself can cost $3 baht... More

It's a great train journey from Bangkok, you catch the train from Thonburi train station which from central Bangkok can take about 45 minutes by taxi. The train journey takes roughly 2 1/2 hours.
