The 2 “brotherly” temples by the lake are in their juice and are not at all flashy. They seem very authentic. The collection of Burmese glass panels painted upside down telling the story of Buddha's life is very beautiful. It deserves a little facelift to better highlight it. The visit is pleasant.

As another poster has suggested, this is a wonderful temple for taking photos. The monks are friendly and informative, Don't miss the museum beside the main stupa; there are lots of ancient sculptures/statues demonstrating Buddhist philosophy touching the Buddha's meeting with the old, the sick and the dead and which had such a profound influence on his teachings. (No, nothing heavy but easy for non-Buddhists to understand).

Two things really stand out about this wat. The thrill of seeing it all lit up backdropping the lake at night. And the truly fascinating small doll and pictograph museum with a striking artistic Buddha in the foyer (I also enjoyed the copacetic kitty sitting on the floor which started purring as soon as I touched it. Ignore the “no women” sign. Other than that, the wat is standard modernistic Thai boring.

Wat Jong Kham was built approx 200 years ago by the Shan (Thai Yai) people. Wat Jong Klam has 100 years old glass paintings and a museum. Both are in the same grounds near the lake, Nong Jong Kham. There is also a huge Buddha which looks like basket weaving. Some areas women are forbidden to enter, so make sure you observe the relevant signs. The buildings are just magnificent including the stupas. A must is to visit at night as most of buildings are lit up and it is just beautiful with the night markets, food stalls and music playing. Take in a meal from one of many food vendors, sit by the lake and take in the view. Just magic!

Mae Hong Son is a pretty upland town which sees a steady flow of visitors. One of its must-see attractions is the pretty lakeside wats in the centre of town. They are often said to be 'Burmese' in style, but as far as I can gather, this actually means in the manner of Shan wats from the troubled nation's Shan State.

What you find here is markedly different from a Thai wat. It is more like a sprawling teak house filled with pillars, mounted deer's heads, statues, votives, wall calendars and other assorted bric-a-brac. From outside you see tiered roofs, golden chedis and delicate metal fretwork. It's definitely worth seeing.

By all means when you are in Mae Hong Son this is a place to visit. It is a very modest temple compared to those in Chaing Mai but houses a marvelous collection of Burmese reverse painted glass panels telling the story of the life of Buddha. Well worth the visit.

It’s hard to recommend a visit to a temple as there are so many and they mostly blend into each other in memory after a while. This temple gave me the most homely feeling I’ve ever had so that’s a bonus and everything else was as it should have been. No other visitors at my time of visiting and no charges, parking was easy at the front of the build but if it was busy the spaces are limited. Be sure to take the time and see it all.

Take an easy walking and self guiding in Mae Hong Son city. Wat Cjhong Kum is a great place to visit for an authentic Shan architecture and also a wood carving dolls museum is also located in the main temple building. A very old glass paintings are also exhibited and all these paintings are done by Burmese artisan.

Although we did not visit inside the temple, we found it very interesting and beautiful to see from the lake and more up close.
