The ingenuity of creating this underground city is amazing.
This ancient city was built by hollowing out volcanic granite called "tufa." The larger areas and chambers are connected to each other by tunnels and there is a pipe communication system. The Byzantines in this area also built underground Christian churches to evade Roman capture and control. This complex has a total of 10 floors and housed up to 60 K people for up to three months at a time.

    Less Known Underground City Complex
Özkonak Underground City is one of the underground cities in the Cappadocia region. Less famous and smaller compared to Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı, but this one has unique features compare to others with its pipe communication system reaching each of its levels. Parking are quite easy at the entrance of the site. Walking inside the tunnel system require us to bend a bit at several location and we completed visit the area within 2 hours.

    Interesting way of life
I was so glad our guide took us to this underground city. This one is smaller and less crowded. Once you've seen one city you've seen them all. So it was good for my claustrophobic husband to go to this shorter city. Very interesting how the people lived.

Nice but very small. After taking tens of kilometers, you have to pay for parking on an empty street. It took relatively short time to finish visiting. I would recommend Derinkuyu if you want to see an underground city.

This place was fascinating. It is very small, but not crowded. Take your time and experience the caves and hear the stories. Interesting how they managed to live and create a life for themselves underground. This is the only underground city I visited here so I have nothing to compare it to. It has small, narrow hallways that you have to almost crawl to get through, so be physically able and willing to do it.

While smaller than the other touristed underground cities, Özkonak gives you a good feel for how the people used and occupied these spaces. The engineering behind their defensive structures was very impressive, and easy to understand. A great advantage of Özkonak is that it isn't at the top of the tour bus list (because of it's modest size). A disadvantage, however, is that they don't practice any form of traffic control... visitors have to take it upon themselves to know when to squeeze through these narrow passageways. Unfortunately for us, a group of 30+ tourists came into the small chamber we were exploring and made it quite difficult to get out! Nevertheless, well worth a visit.

I would have given this place an "excellent", but I am restricting it to a "very good", because my claustrophobia, and my asthma, detracted a bit from my enjoyment of the place. Some of the passages are barely half a metre wide. Others are so low that you have to bend almost double, which is very bad for asthmatics like me. If you don't have these issues, you ought to enjoy this place. The guide (we were on a conducted tour) had a lot of details of the history of the place, how people lived underground, how they defended themselves, etc...etc.... True paradise for history buffs. And, if you are not bothered by claustrophobia or asthma, you can get some really good photographs. There are much bigger underground cities to see in Cappadocia. This is one of the smaller ones. We were taken here, because of the lack of time. Next time, I will try my luck with one of the other underground cities. I hope I can get over the claustrophobia by then!

I was a bit disappointed by this underground city, as I had a huge expectations and I thought that I will access multiple floors and the visit itself will be for 2 hours or so. In reality, 2 floors were accessible and the visit was for something less than 1 hour. I think this might have been caused by a tour guide from our tour that didn't make the visit of the place very interesting for us.

The entire intricate underground city of Onkonak was carved out of the soft volcanic tuff rocks. This was one of several underground cities found in Cappadocia. The Hittites, Phrygians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, and later by early Christians carved elaborate rooms into the soft volcanic rocks. The structures served various purposes, including protection from invasions, religious practices, and practical living spaces.

Very small underground city. Very interesting man (Ismail). Watch out for the restaurant/ shop with no menu and prices. They will rip off all tourists who go. They charge what they want. I would recommend the other cave cities over this because of the size and restaurant.
