It was wonderful to see all of these now exposed caves that people in lived in, worshipped and raised their families long ago.

The entire region of Cappadocia has a unique geologic, historic and cultural importance. Sediment rocks you see around were formed by lava and ashes of the nearby Mt. Erciyes eruption some 3 million years ago. Softness of these rocks enabled people to carve caves, shelters, houses, churches and monasteries within them.
The region became an Orthodox monastic center around the 4 c at the end of the Roman period and lasted until the Seljuks conquest in the 13 c. Seljuks expelled the native Cappadocia Greeks and introduced Islam. All the Churches you see inside the rocks date from that period, some of them perfectly preserved considering their age.
Exploring the whole region requires some 3 to 4 days, as those dwellings are scattered in about 100 km radius from Goreme, best to have your own car.
Some unmissable places are: Zelve open air museum, Goreme open air museum, Uchisar, Ortahisar, Ihlara valley, Cavusin ghost town, etc

Is sad to see how little people enjoy from cappadocia when just doing tours. I walked 17km at least everyday and saw so much. All the valleys and many caves that are not commercial.
There are many caves like this where they make you pay to visit, like the Uchisar, for example, but all cappadocia is full of free caves to visit.

Beautiful and amazing sight to behold! We will definitely be back with our family. We spoke to many of the young kids who were there on an excursion and they had so much info and fun insights on Turkish culture.

Very interesting human history and civilization, the carved caves is a massive work of craftsmanship, cave dwellings everywhere in the area just walk around and enjoy the atmosphere.

Although the government has pretty much moved people out from living in the caves anymore, some of them are still occupied for tourist shops, cafes, and even lodging. Amazing to think that people lived in these dwellings up until very recently.
