We were on a coach tour and had only one hour to explore. The ancient cave dwellings were used by Catholics who were on the run from Roman-occupied lands. The literally dug a city out of the soft volcanic rock. You will see homes, monasteries and churches. The churches were adorned with wall; and ceiling paintings which are still visible and surprisingly fresh. In the monastery, you can see where a table and benches were carved out of the rock, so that the rock provided for most needs, shelter, worship, furniture, etc. The area of Urgup is extensive and appears to have been a large and thriving city in it's day. This place is a MUST-SEE!
There is some access for wheelchairs and there is souvenir shopping, food and toilet facilities on site. I recommend you go and spend some time here. It is unique :)

It's really a 200 year old Greek doll house and collection of antique sundries (from an old remington typewriter to a peg football board game), but also much more than that. There are thousands (I think the owner said 2500 in his entire collection, some of which is not being displayed) handmade paper mache dolls made by the owner's mother. Some are the size of a standard barbie, others are life size. Each, he said, took about a month to make. There are depictions of important Turkish Sultans and their wives, Turkish merchants, sailors, soldiers, and folk tale heroes that give you a unique, if a little eccentric, view into historic Turkish life. He also has a collection of dolls donated by other visitors from Thailand, India, Cuba, and everywhere else dolls are made. The house goes up a couple floors to a balcony with an incredible view, then down to an underground cave basement. The ticket price includes a guided tour by the owner, who obviously loves his museum and wants to communicate this love to the visitors.

This museum - housed in an elegant, historic town house - is a real 'find': it combines a folk museum (displays of popular arts and crafts illustrating how local people used to live) with a large collection of dolls and puppets both from Turkey and from other countries around the world. The 'Turkish' dolls model regional costumes and act out aspects of their country's culture and history. Many of them are expertly made by the curator's mother. The curator himself (who conducts visitors around the museum on what is in effect a private tour) provides detailed explanations about the exhibits; his evident affection for them is touching, his expert knowledge a constant source of enlightenment.

This is one of the most interesting places in Cappadocia. In one museum you take an unbeliavable tour of history, culture, architecture, religion of the region and Anatolia in general. The owners are extremly nice and helpful. The building itself worth visiting. The village is beautiful and worth a short trip (6 kilometre) from Urgup. Highly reccomended!

This place is like living museum and well described for the travellers. Situated within population and quite common to have crowd interested in Churches and old style of living and surviving against all odds. Place is neat and clean and charge entry fees for main entry as well as for one cave with well restored murals

My family and I visited this museum in July. We travel often and are very interested in seeing very local museums as well as sites of historical significance. This museum was a gem. tucked away off the beaten track, it offered a fascinating Ottoman and Turkish history through handmade dolls. I've never seen anything like it. And the hosts are very welcoming! a must see if you're in the area.

This is a hidden gem of a museum- filled with meticulously hand crafted dolls that speak of folklore, heritage and history of the Ottoman Legacy to present day. We had a wonderful tour given by the Curator, Mr Serkan, who brought the dolls to life.

We stopped into this little museum ( I gather it is also a B&B) and were enchanted. The owner is a woman who is a maker and collector of dolls, but the home also houses a small but intriguing collection of items pertaining to Cappadocian culture, many in the form of small diorama scenes. The owner's son and museum curator Serkan is a treasure trove of history and information, and spent lots of time with us answering questions. If, like us, you come to places like Turkey to learn about others' history and culture, you'll really enjoy this lovely spot! And there's also a sweet little patio to stop for a refreshment when you're done.

As a worldtraveller and travel writer, this breathtaking almost 200 year old magnificent museum-boutique hotel is on top of my list..countless reasons: its unique history with old inhabitants, the tranquil atmosphere of town out of nowhere, privilege of meeting its goddess like creator, artist owner Sibel Gül, feeling like home with ownership yet the one of a kind interior with utmost authenticity in all aspects...an experience of lifetime never to miss!
