This small museum is located in the middle of the "Heart of Sharjah", a village built in the old arab style which includes Cafés, Restaurants, Souks and workshops. Apart from a few older and very precious works of various artists from Turkey and Syria, the special exhibition "Music of Letters" shows works of the Iranian calligrapher Bahman Panahi who lives in Paris. A rather modern approach to calligraphy which is fascinating. Walking around in that village is also a pleasure.

The Sharjah Calligraphy Museum is one of the 4-5 museums located in the heart of Sharjah and of the ones I visited, I was the least impressive. To begin with, the museum is in a rather nondescript building and the receptionist was out, having locked the place when I visited. After 10 minutes, he opened the place on his return and I was able to enter. The museum has a hall and a few small galleries, showing examples of Islamic calligraphy in different scripts. Some of the calligraphy items were really beautiful. However, it was difficult to escape the feeling that these were just a collection; there was nothing really to stimulate interest in the art of Islamic calligraphy. Inside, the lighting was limited and facilities too were few. The receptionist seemed to be the only member of staff; there should at least be an audio guide service or an actual guide to explain more about the displays. Not really worth it even with a low entrance fee of AED 5. I was out within 20 minutes.
