Built in 1745 by Portuguese authorities. This wonderfully kept monument adds beauty to the Historic Centre which offers a gorgeous opportunity to enjoy charming Colonia.

This gate was the only entrance through the city wall in colonial times. It was rebuilt between 1968 and 1971 by the ruins of the old wall and wooden drawbridge. The remaining level of the original wall, partially rebuilt, is marked by bronze nails.

Portals to the past are always important when viewing historical sites, but this one in particular is very well preserved, and appears more like a window between worlds.

Beautiful old gate and stonework. Only a small portion to see and upper part of the fort is not original however well worth seeing and there is no cost involved. Easy to se e as part of any walking tour around the historic district and this area part of the UNESCO listed area.

The old part of Colonia is very small and especially if you rent some kind of vehicle to tour it (recommended) you'll certainly come across this puerta - probably several times! It's a good place to wander around and clamber over some of the wall. You'll no doubt have more than enough time to kill in Colonia, so make this... More

The main gate and entrance to the walled city. It has the original base and reconstructed walls . Try to go early morning In order to read the inscriptions.

When you see the Gate of the old citadel you can imagine how impressive and strong it was in its heyday. Semi ruined but a small walk in the walls is an interesting experience

The city gate is, of course, a must see. The ruins are charming and provide good photo spots. It is located in the historic center. One can climb the ruins and it is quite fun. Colonia del Sacramento is a small city and walking around the historic center can take from half an hour to hours top (not including visits... More
