The Convent was part of our overall NCL tour of Colonia Del Sacramento. The History of this area is very well preserved and we walked for about 2hrs around the town. Roads are a mix of cobblestone and broken pavement so wear good walking shoes. Lots of history to see and there are some interesting restaurants in town. Some buetiful... More

Since the lighthouse sorta protrudes from the ruins, they can't be missed and they add on unusual look to the lighthouse.

Colonia del Sacramento was a most interesting place with excellent history in a very well maintained small town. The convent was a good example of many intersting buildings. It was safe, the people were friendly and very easy to get around.

The ruins of the convent of San Francisco date back to the 17th century but only stood for 10 years before being destroyed by fire. Walk around the ruins of thick stone walls or climb to the top of the lighthouse to view the ruins from above.

This place was a hoot! If you visit the lighthouse, you won't miss these ruins nearby. They are fabulous fun, even on a rainy gloomy day. I recommend you set aside 5-10 seconds of your day just towards this attraction.

The lighthouse is the highest point in the town and it sits above the ruins of the convent which is essentially two brick walls. The convent was built in 1694 and destroyed by fire in 1704. The lighthouse commenced in 1845 and was finally finished in 1857.

They still had the nativity in place when we visited which was quite magical but be careful when going down the stairs into the nave as it's very dark and has low ceilings Some great stained glass windows and the convent has a very peaceful aura

Located in front of the lighthouse. Original ruins of a Portuguese convent. In the center square as you enter the old town. Do stop and look at the other old building surrounding the square.

A visit here takes you to the ruins of what was a convent dating back to 1683. The walls are very thick and you can still see the foundations. A small area but you can just get a feel for what was once there.
