Close to the centre of Takayama is Shiroyama Park. It is quite spacious and allows an escape from the city life. Walking trails meander around the hill and eventually end up at the ruins of Takayama Castle. The castle is on a hill over 600m high and was built around 1600AD. The walk is very pleasant but I was a little concerned just near the start of the walk to read a warning to walker about bears on the mountain especially as it was late in the day.

My wife and I were in Takayama for a few days to view the autumn leaves around the area. Shiroyama Park was right behind the ryokan we were staying and had a splendid display of autumn colours. We were there on a Sunday morning and the park was not crowded. There were a handful of visitors like us enjoying the showcase of nature's beauty. The park was tranquil and presented us with many photo opportunities. Shiroyama Park is easily one of the best places in the Takayama area to view Japan's renowned autumn colours. Not to be missed especially if you are in Takayama during autumn. And the best thing is that is it free.

Takayama municipal Traditional Culture house called "Den-Shou-Kan" 高山市文化伝承館 located heart of Shiroyama park on Higashiyama temples town only five-minutes-walk on gentle slope from main traditional street. This is a empty wooden local style building with tea ceremony house on the garden. It shows traditional dolls on March and tea ceremony takes place on limited weekend of April. The reason why I recommend here is outstanding curator Ms Natsuko-san has executive English interpreter with official Japanese guide license. Ask your any question to her, she is so kind and helpful. Admission free open 9am~4:30pm seven days of the week but sometimes closed on temporary.

I love parks but wouldn't recommend this one. If you're on the higashiyama walking tour then continue through it but don't go out of your way.

Winding trails eventually lead to the place where the Takayama castle once existed. Now a flat plateau reached by a series a trails and stairs. The Park is a beautiful walk with bear boxes left to bang loudly. People often wear bear bells which tinkle nicely in the crisp autumn air. Happy you to report, we did not see bears - only wonderful colors

I’ve visited this park in January with snow everywhere and now in autumn. Both seasons this park offers serenity, beautiful views over Takayama and beyond, a lovely chance to be experience the outdoors and take in the story of Takayama castle. A great way to finish a wonderful trip

We are not quite sure of our location, but when we reached the top we enjoyed sitting on the deck of a very pleasant small restaurant sipping coffee and eating the most delicious cake prepared by a young lady who served us. The Autumn colours were at their best and there had been a sprinkle of snow on the distant mountains. A wonderful experience, especially when you set out on a pleasant walk, not sure of what you are going to see!

Situated at the site where Takayama castle once stands., it was a steep walk uphill to reach the park. There are many stone monuments in he park . There is a playground for children and the statue of Nagachika Kanamori ( founder of Takayama castle) stands in the centre. There are many cedar, cypress, pine and oak trees. The park is also home to many wild birds and small wild animals like squirrels. After coming down from the park, we went to visit Shoreenji temple, situated at the starting point of our walk uphill.

We stopped in this park to eat a picnic lunch we bought at the supermarket. There were nice benches in the shade that worked well for this. There are also some very nice views over Takayama from here.
The walking trails were closed due to bear sightings!
