- Zfy EdSingapore, Singapore10,527 contributionsWonderful local market that offered a good feel and taste of local lifestyle and foods! We were visiting Takayama Old Town as part of our day trip and stopped by here enroute there. It was almost 10.30am when we arrived and the morning/farmers markets were almost going to close (usually around 11am-12pm) but we managed to shop there. We saw some stall holders doing their packing while some were still running their businesses. (but you could also buy from the shophouses too instead of the makeshift stalls) It's a good place to visit as the makeshift market stalls were located next to the river canal and they were mainly selling their own produces like rice, fruits, veggies, pickles with some local arts and crafts. Prices here were relatively cheap and reasonable and the stallholders were very friendly though they speak no English. You could try the samples before buying and the stallowners were generous in serving too. We managed to buy quite a good number of local produces. They were nice and cheap! Great to visit here and do allocate sufficient time (i.e. coming earlier) so that you can shop fully, stretching about 200-300m!Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten January 1, 2024
- Julie S345 contributionsGreat little market.Lovely market where I bought lots of reasonably priced gifts. Pleasant surroundings, it's a nice walk along the river where you can see carp and herons. Also some interesting sculptures around. There are lot of nice shops beside the market too.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten May 17, 2024

It opens at 7am so we visited the market after we did the Higashiyama walking course. Interesting stalls selling coffee with edible (cookie) cup, Sarubobo (mascot of hida region), takoyakis and waffles etc. Love that we can sit down by the river to enjoy our food.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten June 10, 2024
- SOH KIEN PENGSingapore, Singapore9,335 contributionsAtmospheric and vibrantThe nostalgic historic old towns always bring out the charms, uniqueness and distinctiveness of the culture of the people of that country or place at a certain stage in that country history. I always love that immersive cultural walk to discover the historical past. Walking along Jonker Street and the Portugese Village conjure images of the colonial past when Malacca was the Venice of the East. Wandering around Hoi An Old Town bring me back to the historic past when Hoi An was the prominent trading port for the European, Japanese and Chinese merchants. The intrinsic Japanese Bridge and Japanese settlement left an indelible historic footprint in this Vietnamese old town. The Lijiang Old Town in Yunnan set the historic silk and tea route in the south and the centre of cultural exchange between the Han, Naxi, Tibetan and the miao minorities. It can be Huanglongxi, it can be the Vigan city or the Fenghuang ancient town.. the list continued. And right here in Takayama old town, the houses of the Edo period are beautifully preserved when the city thrived as a wealthy merchant town during the feudal ages. Here you cannot find the neon lit entertainment hub of Shibuya. I like this morning market beside the River Miyagawa where the locals showcase their stuff. While most museums, temples in the old houses are quiet, the morning market is so vibrant and rowdy with crowd. I walked from one end of the market to the other end and like to look and appreciate the items each stall was selling. Most stalls sold local crafts and farm products such as vegetables, pickles and flowers. Atmospheric and add much dynamism to this quaint old town.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten June 13, 2024

Pleasant morning walk through the market to see the local produce and crafts being sold. Get your coffee cup from one of the stalls - expresso or macchiato (600yen) served in a edible baked pastry 'cup', after finishing the expresso/macchiato bring the coffee cup back for a dash of whipped cream have with the cup.
Found a good breakfast place - Hibikorekoujitsu towards the end of the market that served a set of sushi rice balls and a cup of beef or pork miso soup.

We visited Takayama's morning market as part of a tour going to Shirakawa Go. We were given 2 hours to look around the area, and this included small shops that sell souvenirs, street food, and the like. Good places to take photos of. Make sure you try grilled hida beef (so good!), and the croissant. Another popular street food is the beef buns (nothing special for me, though). All in all a good experience.
TIP: The morning market ends at 12nn.

It was a late November morning, we went there early hoping to see more local artisanal stalls, the really locals were farmers selling their production... Majority of stalls and shops are commercial. We found later round 11AM in typical old town shops for better quality artisanal products...
The market is on the river bank, it was very pleasant to walk through the river bank, birds and golden fishes, the river bank was under development, it should be more beautiful once development was done.

Morning markets are held in many parts of Japan, with farmers, fishermen, craftsmen among others offering their products to customers at temporary stalls. There are a handful of morning markets with a long tradition, Wajima in Ishikawa Prefecture, Katsuura in Chiba Prefecture as well as Takayama with two, one along Miyagawa and another in front of the Jin-ya. We strolled along Miyagawa River till we reached Enako River. Perhaps it was because it was an early Friday morning, but the market was not that packed with stalls. Our guides told us the difficulty of maintaining the number of stalls due to retirement and other issues.

The morning market essentially sells souvenirs as well as some local produce. The products sold are similar to the old streets or the adjacent shops. It is the local version of a flea market and is very touristy. As usual the locals are friendly and polite and you will have a great time browsing along the streets. It is connected to the old shopping streets so you can combine it with your your to the old street since it is barely 300m away from this area. Do remember to try the ice cream, hida beef as well as the local rice buns with hida beef. Each of these cost around 450 yen but are nice local delicacies to try. Spend about 30 minutes here and then walk to the old streets . Enroute you can snack on the above mentioned snacks .

We already booked a trip to Nagoya Dec 29-05Jan, forgetting that this is a Japanese holiday period.
Would anyone know the schedule of Takayama area, the market in particular? We want to go back to the delicious hida beef and the quaint coffee shop with Napolitana pizza and award winning cheesecake among others.
Is it more advisable to make sure we are there on the 30th (bef everyone takes a break on the 31st) or would Jan3-5 be a better time?
Takayama experts/residents please advise. THANKS!!

Many travellers are travelling to that area for the snow during that period. Hopefully the tourist agency can respond to your enquiries! The Japanese people really love their holidays.
I believe there's also a nearby town of Hida-Furukawa (30mins by train from Takayama) where there might be festivities as well. So that period of travel might still yield some good experiences.
Sorry I couldn't help more.

Would 11am be too late to visit the market? I see some reviews say it closes at 12pm. So would there be little left to see and try around 11am?
Written March 31, 2016
It would be better to go earlier to be on the safe side. There are two markets the bigger one (though still small) is in an open space, the other is along the riverbank, just a few mins walk away. I found this one more photogenic and it seems to close a bit later.

whats a cheap n convinient way to go to the market from the takayama station?
Written November 23, 2015
Takayama is relatively small and most attractions can be reached by walking. This is the best way to see the town. There is no need to take taxi or public transport. Get a map from the bus station. There is an information counter outside the bus station. A map will be very helpful.
