- tomizuta1953Funabashi, Japan1,358 contributionsThe main temple building according to the temple’s website was built by the 15th century at latestIn 741, Emperor Shomu issued a decree that a temple should be established in each of the more than 60 regions throughout Japan to pray for peace in the country through Buddhism. The Buddhist temples were called Kokubunji. Most of the Kokubunji temples have been lost or succeeded by other temples. Hida Kokubunji is one of the rare cases where the Kokubunji still exists in its original location. The original buildings have all been lost, but the current main temple building (hondo) which according to the temple’s website was built in the 15th century by the latest, remains to this day, and has been designated as an important national cultural property. Beside the hondo is a magnificent ginko tree estimated to be at least 1250 years old, meaning it must have been here from when the original Kokubunji was built. Originally, seven-story pagodas were built at all Kokubunji temples, which have all been lost. Hida Kokubunji has a 22 meters high three-story pagoda built in 1821, the tallest in the Hida region. The temple is located halfway from the JR Station to the popular merchant district and you may not notice it unless you look for it. In our case, this was the first place the local guide took us to. It was certainly well worth the visit.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten November 14, 2023

Tori gate, temple, a huge tree and a pagoda, that's it. It's a good place to take a break too. Do note the opening hours 9am to 4pm as we thought it is 24 hours accessible but the entrance is to the compound was shut when we try to visit late in the evening.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten June 7, 2024
- Nicole W61 contributionsQuiet place to visitWhen walking around town this is a must visit temple, it is a typical temple complex on a small site. The pagoda is beautiful, the 1200 year old tree is impressive. There is some nice shade at the complex for a small rest. I like to make pictures with no people in the picture, the complex is really quiet and i made some nice images without tourists or locals.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten August 27, 2024

Hida Kokubun Ji is worth a visit. I state in my blog, come for the temple but stay for the Gingko Tree. The tree here is truly amazing. It's huge and beautiful. The whole temple complex is nice, there is a temple, pagoda, and the Gingko Tree. It's not a far walk from either the train station or down town area.

You will find this deserted pagoda in Kokubunji in Takayama city, .right in front of station. There is a plenty of sign of neglect around and in ginkgo tree.

We visited in the evening and it was lovely to see the pagoda without the crowds. The Ginkgo tree is not to be missed, really impressive and not something you see everyday!

We visited there because of the famous ginkgo tree. On November 20th, 2017, the leaves all turned yellow and the ginkgo looks spectacular!! It's a 1200 years old tree, so tall that you can see it from miles away. Other than the ginkgo tree, the temple is also nice, tranquil and historical. And the location is close to the main bus station.

Just to see the magnificent 1200 year old Gingko tree still standing proudly in the courtyard. Nice temple and statues scattered around the small grounds.

We accidentally went inside this temple, an awesome discovery on this giant Ginkgo Tree, 28 meter in height, with a circumference of 10 meter. Stunning.

Worth going just to see the giant Ginko Tree. We went twice and there was hardly anyone there both times. Very peaceful. Located off Kokubunji Street which is like the main shopping street. Its set back from the street but you should see the pagoda when you are near it.

Kokubunji is a must see. It sits between the train station and old town so you don't even have to go out of your way to get a glance at this 3 story pagoda. But the main attraction is the giant ancient ginko.
