One of the best castles I have seen in Japan and one of the few original left. I highly recommend including at least one castle in a trip to Japan and this is one of the best choices.

As one of the original 12 castles in Japan, this has been largely left as is for visitors. Hence need to go barefoot and climb steep stairs (unlike Osaka Castle). Lovely view from the top floor.

Looks stunning from outside but it's merely an empty shell. A small collection of guns, a piece of samurai armour and a lot of climbing up steep steps. Save your money and just photo it from outside.

Really boring. Waste of time. Typical Japanese 'castle' that's been renovated as a museum for tourists. Don't waste your time

This is a beautiful castle. It's my favorite out of all the other castles I've seen in Japan. It is also ranked one of the highest. Lots of historic items to see inside the castle. Definitely a must see.

My first Japanese castle I visited. Go early in the morning upon opening as it can become very busy!

Black crow - opposite to white heron - Himeji Castle - this one is full black. Beautiful. Original. Inside a very interesting collection of japanese weaponry. From the top level great panorama.

Matsumoto castle is one of only 12 original castle keeps left in Japan. As if that isn't rare enough the castle is also the only black original castle keep left, the black crow castle. The grounds and castle are really stunning, and what is great...More

Picturisque. If you are fit, do climb up to the top. The steps are steep though. Its about USD5 for entrance fee if Im not mistaken. Lovely scenic views. Beautiful.

I'm not allowed to post website addresses apparently so look up Japan Guide, Alpico Express Bus and Nouhi Bus websites. All very helpful for planning bus trips and I assume you already know about Hyderdia for trains? Really... More

I'm not too sure if you are still looking at this or not, but instead of giving you the right route to go with, I thought I just mention the time you will possibly spend at Matsumoto Castle and Snow Monkeys. I spent a day... More
