I've visited Tomo several times as a friend lives there and have always enjoyed it. There is a nice walk along the seafront with views out to some of the smaller islands (you can get ferries across to some of them too) and also a very traditional old town with lovely buildings, cafes and shops. Well worth a visit!

Tomonoura is a lovely place to wander around the cute harbour with old fishing boats. We found a little cafe with a couple of outdoor seats right on the harbour near the distinctive stone lighthouse and took in the relaxed vibe. We went to the Ota residence which was the home of a family who manufactured homishu a medicinal shochu made from glutinous rice. A walk up the unspoilt alleys past the old chandlers shop and up steps to the lookout overlooking the town was worth it.
Then we found the Fukuzen-ji temple and in the grounds the Taichoro building which was a large tatami matted room with a picture window looking out to the bay with a gorgeous view admired in the past apparantly by visiting Korean envoys.
Found a nice place for lunch nearby at Chitose just behind the open carpark just north of the Tomo Seaside hotel. Friendly service and we had a set menu consisting of fish in soy, turnip straws in sesame dressing, tempura, squid sashimi, vinegared rice dish with fine yellow noodles, pickles, lotus root, ginger and octopus, a bamboo shoot and burdock dish and miso. If you like quiet and rustic places, you should head for Tomonoura. It is a 30min bus ride from Fukuyama Station bus centre. Alight at the Tomonoura bus stop where there is a Tourist Visitors Center in the souvenir shop. You could get all the info required and guidance about walking and seeing the places of interest from this centre.
It is a small town and you could walk along the coastal road to these places of interest. Residents here are very friendly and welcoming. Most visitors here are local tourists. Hardly any foreign tourists!
Our visit was cut short due to the Typhoon Trami warning in the late afternoon as we have to make it back to Hiroshima via Fukuyama. Understand Fukuyama suffered some damages due to the typhoon the next morning.
Highly recommended.

It takes one hour from Onomichi riding on a train and a bus. The scenery is not so unique and
I liked islands near Onomichi better.Maybe a ferry from Onomichi to Tomonoura only on Satrudays , Sundays and Holidays could be more interesting. You may think of visiting there
if you have spare time.

Tomonoura is a small, traditional fishing village near Fukuyama city. I recommend going here if you want to see an authentic unspoiled Japanese town with beautiful scenery. There aren't a lot of attractions as such but it has a great atmosphere, old traditional buildings and amazing views of a unique part of the Seto Inland Sea. I recommend going to Taichoro which is a building originally used as a guesthouse for visitors from Korea. It has one of the best views in Japan. There are a lot of small rocky islands in the sea around Tomonoura and the area was the inspiration for Hayao Miyazaki's film "Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea".

白壁の倉庫風の、竜馬資料館もよいのですが、できれば、走島行きフェリー乗り場のさらに奥へ進んでみてください。そこから、灯篭の方角を見るのがおすすめ。反対側も海で、
満足感があることでしょう。

Tomo no ura is probably a place to visit if you have lots of spare time in between. It's a seaside town near to fukuyama city which can be access by a local bus(approximately 30mins) at the bus station in front of the JR station. We went to a few areas in the hiroshima region and this is probably one of the least impressive. I would suggest making trip to onomichi instead if u have limited time. However we had fun exploring the little town which can be done in 2hrs or less as its a really small place and most shops are close.

Brilliant, absolutely ruddy bloody brilliant. Loved every second of a day out to Tomonoura with my missus, my new young baby and his aunt who’s come to visit.
Here are some things YOU MUST DO:
1:Go to every Yomeishu brewery (4 in total) Yomeishu (Traditionally spiced herbal Sake that you can get NO WHERE ELSE in Japan and is exquisite) will be given freely in liberal samples and is so cheap for how delicious and alcoholic it it!
2:Take the old traditional Japanese boat that’s been converted into a ferry over to Sensui island and once there (if you visit in summer) have a lovely swim on the beach on the Northside of the island. You can camp on the island too.
3: Try ‘Sea salt flavoured soft serve and Sea salt flavoured candy’ Trust me- absolutely delicious despite sounding odd. Like salted caramel for people with a moderate sweet tooth.
Do not, and I repeat, do not be tempted to sample ‘Sardine flavoured ice cream on the mainland’- it is disgusting and the taste will stay in your mouth for days.
4:Take in Tomonoura in all its wonderful historic charm. Just chill. It’s a great place.
It costs ¥520 if you catch the bus from platform 5 at the main Fukuyama-shi bus station per adult and take about 25 minutes to get there (and the same amount and time back). Buses run every 20 minutes on weekdays and every 40 on weekends and public holidays.
Tomonoura is fantastic. Get smashed on sake and have a great time with the fam!

Certainly only a few things to see and visit but if you have time, it is worth losing it (in the right manner) here. Time passes by slowly, the small wharf, the small town and the small island across the town (+ some sea kayak) are a great stop between more touristic places (and stay at Migiwatei Ochi Kochi)

Arriving by bus from Fukuyama Station this place looks like a sleepy fishing village. However, I find this place interesting. It is quite easy to explore it because of its compactness. I'd found and visited a few temples here. Found them to be rich in history and one with an exceptional view. The port was full of small fishing vessels. But I didn't see much fishermen around when I was there. The streets around town are nostalgic. The smell of medicinal liquior is quite strong in one street...afterall this is the home of homeishu medicinal wine.
I am of the opinion that this is a good place to experience a small Japanese village.

Bonjour,
Nous avons logé dans un ryokan superbe qui vaut largement le prix: Migiwatei Ochi Kochi.
Tomonoura est assez petit, il y a donc peu de possibilités de logement...
Salutations

Une adresse d'hotel pas trop cher a Tomo no Ura?
merci

The hotels in this sightseeing district are not reasonable price.
If you stay hear alone,It's more unreasonable.
I hear Japanese Ryokans are major in this neighbourhood.
Fukuyama City has many Low-Price hotels in central district ; near the JR Fukuyama Station or belong Route 2.
The bus service depart this fisher port bound to Fukuyama central station every fifteen minutes and final one is past 9:PM.
You should look for restaurants as you like near the station.Few of them are closed before 11:PM.
