I have used this office and the office in Terminal 2 several times to exchange vouchers for JR Rail Passes and to get tickets for the NEX and SHINKANSEN.

The offices are located on the Basement level in both terminals, close to the entrance gates to the track platforms.

From the main floor, just follow the TRAIN signs to the escalators. If you have one suitcase that is not terribly heavy the escalator is pretty easy to use. See NOTE 1 for further tips on travelling on the train system with suitcases.

On to the offices. Once down the escalator you can clearly see the red JR Office signs. WARNING - the offices in both terminals are SMALL. Desk Staff speak English but usually there are only two of them. It does not take long for line-ups to build so wait times can be LONG, especially if people don't know the process, are asking for information, and are taking time to decide on what tickets they want.

If you know what you are doing and where you are going, it takes about 10-15 minutes to fill in the form, trade your JR voucher for a pass, and get your tickets for your reserved seats (see NOTE 2). The earlier in the day you can get to the office, the better. ALSO, make sure you check the Hyperdia website schedule and decide on your train departure times in advance, and this will make it easier and faster to secure your tickets.

NOTE 1: If you have more than one suitcase - it is going to be challenging to travel on trains as there is limited space on the trains for suitcases, you have to lift the suitcases quickly into the trains and out, and elevators and even escalators are sometimes difficult to find and navigate to/from at the various stations. ALSO, in Japan there are yellow pathways all over the train stations and streets for disabled people to be able to navigate. These pathways are treacherous for suitcases - they make it extremely difficult to roll along smoothly - so travelling with suitcases (especially heavy ones) will be frustrating. Consider using a bag transfer service if the budget allows.

NOTE 2: ALWAYS reserve seats on the NEX and SHINKANSEN. The trains can fill up quickly so if you take a chance on the non-reserved cars, you may wind up not getting the train you want. Some trains ONLY operate with reserved seats, especially during peak hours or if the trains are scheduled to split up.

NOTE 3: If you know you will be taking the NEX and connecting to a SHINKANSEN, get your NEX and SHINKANSEN tickets at the same time. This will make transferring faster and easier.

NOTE 4: If you are transferring directly from the airport to Kyoto and points west (Shin-Osaka, Kobe, Hiroshima) take the NEX to SHINAGAWA Station. It is a fairly small station, and the NEX and SHINKANSEN gates are very close together, so especially if you have luggage transferring here is relatively easy. In comparison, at Tokyo Station the NEX arrives on a different level that is quite far from the SHINKANSEN gates - and it is a challenge to get from one to the other through the chaos. If you have no choice but to use Tokyo Station, give yourself time to navigate!

JR Travel service offers a special round trip fare from Narita Airport to Tokyo on the NEX train (at this time of posting) $38.00 USD round trip per person. Reserved comfortable seats, fast, convenient, clean, approximately one hour travel time. Coming from New York City where a taxi ride from JFK airport to Manhattan cost $55.00 USD one way, the NEX is a bargain. I stayed in Shibuya so taking the NEX was prefect. My hotel (Excel Hotel) was just above the station. Very easy transaction. Return trip, you will need to go to a JR office and have them reserve your trip back to the airport. My opinion, NEX is the way to go. Thank you for reading.

We arrived at Narita Airport at ard 8.30am. After clearing immigration. And collecting our baggage, we went to the basement to buy our Nex round trip tickets here. It is discounted at ¥4000 per round trip per person.

When you go in, a staff will come and ask you what tickets you want to buy. He will provide a form and help you to fill it in, asking for the date and time of departure and the station you are going and coming from. You then make your final selection of train departure time and make payment by cash or card.

The whole process takes 5 minutes. You then make your way into the platform. It’s very convenient and fast.

In addition to getting our JR Rail Passes, we requested and received 13 separate train reservation tickets for our travel. We had a detailed list showing the train line, train name, departure station and time and arrival station and time. Having this list prepared made the process smooth and quick. The gave us small envelopes to use for each separate days reservations which proved helpful later in our trip in keeping us organized.
We went directly to this basement level center as soon as we cleared customs and our wait in line was less than 2 minutes. We saw a much longer line later and were glad we went there first.

Narita Airport is located far from downtown Tokyo, and taking a taxi from the airport to your hotel in Tokyo can set you back a whopping Euro 250. Airport buses can take anything between 75 minutes and double that time, depending on traffic. The best and easiest option to go to Tokyo from Narita is the Narita Express. It leaves from tracks in the basement of Terminal One. You can buy tickets at the JR East Travel Center - JPY 400 for a return ticket (if your return trip is within 2 weeks of the initial trip) if you show a foreign ID (passport or other). Takes only 55 minutes from Narita Terminal On e to Tokyo Station in central Tokyo..

Was travelling on one of those JR tickets that made it all free to tour the country on the trains - the lady was incredibly polite and helpful directing me in the right direction to the required train. Her help was pretty much replicated throughout Japan so good for them.

We were initially concerned about the long line in front of us, but with good staffing and efficient, knowledgeable personnel, the line disappeared quickly, and we picked up our passes and were soon on our way. Impressive!

Staff are very accommodating and polite. . .typical Japanese customer service. They are busy when I collected my JR Pass, but they still did my booking for Narita Express and shinkansen travels to Kyoto and Osaka. Highly commendable people.
